FSMS, FSHS set some dates

Fort Scott Middle School and Fort Scott High School have each made announcements in which they have set dates pertaining to fall athletics. FSHS athletic director Larry Fink sent notice Tuesday morning that due to changes in the USD 234 district calendar, the date for fall sports parent meetings has been changed to August 13. Sandness recognized for summer work at FSNHS

Beth Sandness was surfing the internet searching for professional development programs for the summer. Sandness, a seventh through 12th grade math teacher at Jayhawk-Linn Junior/Senior High School in Mound City, came across a Teacher Ranger Teacher (TRT) program that Fort Scott National Historic Site (FSNHS) offers. She applied and started the first part of June and is finishing up seven weeks at the site...

USD 234 asking for half-mill increase

The USD 234 Board of Education voted Tuesday to include in its 2014 published budget a half mill increase in the local option budget for 2014 after not securing enough votes on a motion to increase the mill levy by a full mill. With two members (Justin Meeks and Michelle Parker) absent, the board voted 3-2 to increase the levy a full mill, which would add an estimated $75,000 to the district's coffers, but four votes are required to pass a motion. ...
