The Bourbon County Commissioners are taking steps to solve problems of disunity among some of the rural fire departments. At the request of the commissioners, Will Wallis, Bourbon County Emergency Manager, researched the possibility of consolidating the rural fire districts in the county...

Construction on the next phase of projects in the $40.8 million USD 234 school bond issue is slated to begin in the coming months. USD 234 Superintendent Bob Beckham provided an update on upcoming school bond projects during the board's regular monthly meeting Monday. UNIONTOWN -- Uniontown High School hosted its annual home volleyball tournament Saturday and finished in fourth place. The Eagles (16-12) lost their first match in pool play, 25-19, 25-16, to Richmond-Central Heights. Lindsay Nietfeld was successful on 21 of 24 attacks and had 4 kills. Holly Shinn converted 16 of 20 attacks and also had 4 kills...

UNIONTOWN -- According to Uniontown head coach Chad Stroud, no one put up "monster" numbers in the Eagles' Homecoming victory over Marmaton Valley here Friday night. Well, there was one monster number: 56. The Eagles led 34-8 after one quarter and went on to win 56-8 in a game stopped at halftime...

GIRARD -- Camiren Defebaugh turned in her best 18-hole score of the season here Monday, shooting a 94 to finish sixth at the Girard Class 4A Regional Tournament and qualify for next week's Class 4A State Tournament at Hays. Defebaugh shot 47 on the front nine and 46 on the back to finish with a 93, one stroke better than her score on this course earlier this season...

INDEPENDENCE -- Fort Scott High School senior Jennifer Harrison will be going to the Class 4A State Tennis Tournament for the fourth time following a fifth-place finish at the Independence Class 5A Regional over the weekend. "This is a goal she has had since her freshman year, to be our first four-time State qualifier," Fort Scott head coach Lynn Barr said. "We have had many great young ladies in this program and several three-time qualifiers, but she is now our only four-time qualifier."...

IOWA FALLS, Iowa -- Ellsworth led 16-0 after one quarter here Saturday and held on to defeat Fort Scott Community College, 32-14, in a non-conference game. The Greyhounds lost for the sixth consecutive time and stand at 1-6 on the season. Jujuan Young-Battle threw touchdown passes of 35 yards to Marcel Williams and 4 yards to Jaleel Scott in the first quarter. Since the Panthers (2-5) don't have a kicker, they went for 2 after both scores and were successful...

Tiebreaker denies Uniontown chance to compete as team

Christine Wrench-Anthony celebrated her 100th birthday on Saturday, Sept. 12 in Kansas City, Kan. She was born in Mapleton on Sept. 12, 1915. As a single mother, she raised her family in Fort Scott and later moved to Lawrence in 1969. Christine later moved to Kansas City, Kan., in 1976 where she has continued to make her home.
