Construction workers from Lathrop Construction of Nevada, Mo., began laying pipe Tuesday for Uniontown's water system improvement project. Work began on Maple Road, near Kansas Highway 3 and is going east to the city's eastern limit. Edwin E. Helton, age 97, resident of Fort Scott, Kan., died Monday, Feb. 17, 2014, at Guest Home Estates. He was born March 11, 1916, in Yuma, Colo., the son of James E. and Minnie A. Foote Helton. He married Hettie Mae Beattie on Sept. 10, 1934, in Stratton, Colo. They were married for 73 years before she preceded him in death on Nov. 11, 2007.
