100 YEARS AGO (1912) FULTON -- A little snow followed by moderately heavy rain visited this vicinity last week. In spite of the weather a crowd of young folks enjoyed a Halloween party Thursday night at the home of Miss Ruth Cloninger. Halloween games were played and refreshments were served. The news concerning the Arcadia post office reads like this: The meeting was to inform the public of the changes coming early in 2013. It will change from eight hours a day to four hours a day -- Monday through Friday. Saturday will still be open one half hour. The projected times the office will be open are Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to noon. Saturday 10-10:30 a.m. Arcadians give thanks the post office will not be permanently closed...

With incomplete counts in from local counties, it appears Mound City Republican Marty Read has defeated former state Rep. Shirley Palmer for the District 4 House seat. Palmer, D-Fort Scott, served two terms in the Kansas Legislature and was defeated in 2010 by Caryn Tyson, R-Parker. Results were incomplete Tuesday because ballots had to be hand counted in Linn County. The district covers Bourbon, Linn and Anderson counties...
