UPDATE: Person of interest in Fort Scott homicides arrested

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Fort Scott Police Department have arrested 23-year-old Dawson J. Mitchell, the person of interest connected to the murders of Melissa Mitchell and Leonard Zimmerman Tuesday night in Fort Scott.

Dawson Mitchell was arrested at about 1 p.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Fifth and Judson streets in Fort Scott, a KBI news release said.

Mitchell was arrested for theft of a firearm, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and unlawful possession of controlled substances. He was then booked into the Bourbon County Law Enforcement Center, the release said.

Mitchell has currently not been charged related to the murders, the release said.

The release also states an investigation is ongoing and no further information will be released at this time.
