Wallace E. “Wally” Powell, formerly of Fort Scott, finds his name on the Veterans Memorial on Skubitz Plaza in a 2009 photo. Powell, who died Dec. 22, 2012, served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

While searching the Tribune archives for Items “From the Past,” Jason E. Silvers, reporter, found a letter written by his grandfather, Wally Powell.

Many years before he shared stories of his war experiences with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Wallace E. “Wally” Powell shared stories of his travels with his parents.
