Two finish second in brackets at Eudora
EUDORA — Two Fort Scott High School wrestlers finished in second place in their brackets at the Eudora Invitational here Saturday. Jacob Stinnett was second for the Tigers at 132 pounds and Logan Hall placed the same at 182. In all, six wrestlers went on to place.
The Tigers finished 10th out of 15 in team standings with 63 points. Lansing, ranked No. 8 in Class 5A by the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association going into the weekend, was the champion with 179.5 points followed by Emporia in second with 160 and Spring Hill third with 136.
Stinnett, a freshman who is 8-1 this season, began his day with a bye. Then he pinned Emporia’s Travis Rangel in the second period of the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Stinnett won a 10-6 decision over Hagan Andrews of Eudora. In the finals, he met Ethan Ewing of Wellington (11-0), who is ranked No. 1 in Class 3A. Ewing took a 7-2 decision to win the bracket.
Hall, a senior, drew a first-round bye at 182. he took a 7-5 win over A.J. Powell of Lawrence in the quarters and an 8-6 verdict over A.J. Rodriguez of Emporia in the semis. Tucker Mace of Ottawa won a 2-0 decision over Hall in the championship bout.
Jon Daniels placed sixth at 145. He pinned Matthew Lahrmann of St. Marys in the first round and Caleb Taussig of Kansas City-Schlagle in the quarters. Joseph Irwin of Lansing, ranked No. 3 in Class 5A at this weight, pinned Daniels in the semifinals. He’d go on two win the bracket.
Daniels then went to the third-place bracket by lost an 11-5 verdict to Sam Twombly of Rossville. That put him in the fifth-place match, where he was pinned by Eudora’s Holden Andrews.
Shawn Barrager finished in seventh place at 106 pounds. He drew a first-round bye. But then he was pinned by Kevin Honas of Lawrence, who is ranked No. 4 in Class 6A. Going to the back side of the bracket, Barrager drew another bye then pinned Ottawa’s Zack Cunningham in the seventh-place match.
Silas Taylor was seventh at 138. He drew a first-round bye before being pinned by Jakon Stovall of Spring Hill. On the back side, Taylor won a 9-6 decision over Trey Simons of Emporia and pinned Cody Barker of Rossville in the seventh-place match.
There were two Fort Scott wrestlers at 126. Alex Heaton was pinned by No. 5-ranked Drew Brown of Wamego in the first round. He drew a bye on the backside before being eliminated by Zach Razak of Lawrence on a 13-4 major decision. Donald Harper wrestled unattached, meaning his results did not count toward the team score. He was pinned by No. 3-ranked Collin Creach of Ottawa, drew a bye, then was pinned by Eudora’s Will Schreiner.
Kaden Primm was pinned in his first-round 160-pound match versus Davi Capps, who was wrestling unattached. He then drew two byes on the back side before he was pinned by Martin Levenduscky of Shawnee Mission South.
Nick Farrington was 0-2 at 170. He was pinned by Lawrence’s Dylan Gillespie, drew a bye, then was pinned by Rossville’s Kris Brown.
There were also two wrestlers for Fort Scott at 285, Grayson Quick and Syllvin Roark, the latter wrestling unattached. Quick was pinned in the first round by Paul Beasley of Kansas City-Schlagle, who went on to win the championship. Roark drew a first-round bye before being pinned by Braiden McKee of Lansing in the quarters. McKee went on to lose to Beasley, 4-0, in the finals.
With both Tiger wrestlers in consolation, it was possible that they could meet. As it turned out, they did. Quick drew two byes to reach the consolation semifinals while Roark went from the championship quarters into the same consolation semifinal. Quick pinned Roark before being pinned by Ethan Holle of Wamego in the seventh-place match.
Fort Scott travels to Ottawa Saturday for a dual tournament.
