Harrison sweeps Tigers as classic concludes
WILLARD, Mo. — Harrison, Ark., swept Fort Scott High’s basketball teams here Saturday night in the final round of the annual Willard Tri-State Classic.
Harrison’s girls led all the way in a 51-29 win. The Goblins boys’ squad pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 65-52 victory.
Both Tiger teams finishes 0-3 in the tournament, the first games of the year for each team. Harrison’s girls improved to 5-0 while the boys are 4-1.
Girls: Harrison 52, Fort Scott 29.
A pair of 3-pointers by Ella Beth saw the Tigers hold a 6-4 lead with 3:40 left in the first quarter. But Harrison went on a 14-0 run to take the lead for good. The run included 8 points from Brylie Parker, who led the Goblins with 13 points.
Harrison went on 12-0 run in the second to extend the lead to 31-10. Addi Lyons broke the run with the Tigers’ only field goal of the quarter with 25 seconds to go.
Harrison scored four 3-pointers in the third quarter on its way to making it 45-20 at the final break.
Fort Scott scored 9 straight points in the fourth to close the gap to 50-29.
Beth led the Tigers with 13 points as she made four 3-pointers. She has now scored 56 of the Tigers’ 89 points (63 percent) this season.
Only four other Tigers scored, one of whom was Alaina Allen with 6 points. She was fouled with 7/10ths of a second to go in the first. She made the first free throw, then had enough time to get the rebound off a miss on the second and score a basket as the horn sounded.
Boys: Harrison 65, Fort Scott 52.
Despite an 8-0 Harrison run that made it 13-6 with less than a minute remaining in the opening quarter, the Tigers were able to use a run of their own to take the lead midway through the second.
Carter Goldston made two free throws with 4:59 to go to start the run. Nick Lawrence, C.J. Horton, and Jordan Hall scored field goals to make it 24-22 with 3:52 to go.
Hall tied the score for what turned out to be the last time at 29-29 with a minute to go. Jacob Shrum made back-to-back 3-pointers to give Harrison the lead at the break.
Harrison and Fort Scott traded baskets early in the third but a 6-1 run capped by a Horton basket brought the Tigers within 45-41 with 1:20 to go.
Harrison started the fourth quarter by scoring 12 straight points and 17 of the first 20 to make it 62-44 with 2:52 to go.
Shrum led Harrison with 24 points as he made six 3-pointers. Carson Journagan added 18.
Nick Lawrence led the Tigers with 16 points while Hall added 13.
Both Tiger teams are idle until Friday, Dec. 14 when they travel to Labette County to open Southeast Kansas League play.
