No honors for ’Hound football

For whatever reason, absolutely no Fort Scott Community College football players received honors — not even Honorable Mention — when the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference released its All-Conference football team earlier this week.

The Greyhounds finished tied for last place in the conference with Independence, which was the only team Fort Scott defeated in conference play this season. The Pirates had seven players honored.

Conference champion Garden City head coach Jeff Sims was named the conference’s Coach of the Year for the second time in three seasons and the third time overall. He also received the honor in 2009, when he led Fort Scott into the Citizens Bank Bowl, the designated NJCAA championship that season, and in 2016, when he led Garden City to the national championship. The No. 2-ranked Broncbusters (10-0) will face No. 1 East Mississippi (11-0) in the NJCAA National Championship Game on Thursday, Nov. 29 in Pittsburg.

Garden City running back Charles West was named the Offensive Player of the Year. He is currently the nation’s leader in rushing yards with 1,382 (second in per-game average at 153.6, but the leader has played one fewer game). He has scored 14 touchdowns.

Linebacker Monty Montgomery of Hutchinson is the conference’s Defensive Player of the Year. He has made 75 tackles this season, has 5 1/2 sacks and 14 tackles for a loss along with 3 interceptions.

Garden City had the most First Team selections, seven, all of which were on offense. Hutchinson had the most players picked overall, 23, with 11 of those receiving Honorable Mention. Garden City and Highland had 17 players each. Coffeyville had 14 and Butler and Dodge City each had 12 players selected.
