’Hound men enjoy the comforts of home
After starting the season 0-2 with losses last weekend in the Coffeyville Classic, Fort Scott Community College’s men have evened their record this week with a pair of home victories.
Wednesday night, the Greyhounds rolled by the Washburn University junior varsity, 89-63. Friday, on the first night of the annual Gladbach Classic, Fort Scott rolled by Louisiana Christian School, 84-56.
Wednesday: Fort Scott 89, Washburn JV 63.
The Greyhounds ran the court and maintained a margin of about 15 to 20 points for the majority of the contest. They committed only 10 turnovers, dominated the boards, 45-29, and shot 54 percent from the floor.
Fort Scott head coach Michael Cook wants his team to run, though sometimes he has to make sure they know when to do it.
“You might hear me hollering, ‘Go! Go, go, go!’ and once they realize that if they can get stops and (scoring) runs, they don’t have to stop and run offense,” Cook said. “It’s more fun for them to do that.”
Fort Scott scored the game’s first 9 points and also enjoyed an 18-3 run midway through the first half that pushed the margin to 35-15 with 5:23 to go.
It was 46-28 at the half. During the middle of the second half, a 13-3 run pushed the margin to 78-50 with 8:40 to go.
We used the last 10 minutes to get in shape. Let’s run and get something out of it and get something on film so we can fix it. They’re also figuring out how to score with each other, where I want the ball at. We’ll get there. That takes time. It’s a very athletic team and a close team.”
Five Greyhounds finished in double figures led by Craig Jordan with 16 points on seven-of-nine field-goal shooting. Aaron Williams went 6-for-8 in scoring 14 points and also led the ’Hounds with 9 rebounds. Travis Zeon scored 12 points while also recording 6 assists and 5 steals. Andre Nelson scored 11 points and Cade Snyder finished with 10.
Tommy Ekart led Washburn with 16 points, all in the second half, while JoBreil Powell and Spenser Wine each added 12.
Fort Scott made 35 of 65 shots from the field while holding Washburn to 39 percent on 24 of 61.
Friday: Fort Scott 84, Louisiana Christian 56.
Fort Scott rolled out to a 19-4 lead over a Louisiana Christian squad that had lost Thursday night at Independence, going up 19-4 in the first eight minutes of play as the defense held LCS to one field goal in that stretch.
Andre Nelson and Travis Zeno scored big early for the Greyhounds. Tanner Lackey came off the bench to hit some 3-pointers later in the half with back-to-back makes extending the lead to 32-10 with 7:37 remaining.
Fort Scott’s lead was 44-25 at the half as the ’Hounds held LCS to 6-of-24 field-goal shooting and forced 11 turnovers.
Fort Scott scored the first 9 points of the second half and eventually found itself up 71-41 with nine minutes left. Cook used the remainder of the game to give reserves extensive time and while LCS did make a run on them — a 11-2 run initially — they eventually combined for a 9-0 run of their own.
Each of the 14 Greyhounds dressed out played and scored at least 2 points led by Zeno’s 14. Lackey made 4 of 6 triples as he added 12 points. Nelson finished 5 of 7 from the floor for 11 points.
Payne and Wade-Henderson scored 13 points each for LCS with Payne also hauling down 10 rebounds.
Fort Scott shot 48 percent from the field, going 30 of 63, while LCS finished at 36 percent on 20 of 55.
The ’Hounds outrebounded LCS, 39-37.
Kannon Jones handed out 7 assists for the Greyhounds, who had 17 as a team to Christian’s 6 in total.
The Gladbach Classic concludes today. Highland’s men will face Louisiana Christian at 2 p.m. with Fort Scott taking on Neosho County at 6 p.m. Highland beat Neosho County 79-69 Friday afternoon.
