No. 3 Reivers drop ’Hounds
COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa — Fort Scott Community College was the recipient of two Iowa Western turnovers in the first 3:38 of play here Saturday but was unable to turn either of them into points despite starting in Reiver territory.
Iowa Western eventually got over its early jitters and built a 24-0 lead in the first half on the way to a 39-7 victory.
Fort Scott fell to 2-6 on the season while No. 3-ranked Iowa Western improved to 7-1, their only loss coming at current No. 2 Garden City.
Dirion Hutchinson intercepted a pass on the third play of the game, giving Fort Scott the ball at Iowa Western’s 40. But the Greyhounds eventually turned the ball over on downs.
Moments later, Fort Scott recovered a fumble and had the ball at the Reivers’ 40 only to go three-and-out.
Western quarterback T.J. Starks found Nick Singleton from 17 yards out with 5:47 left in the first quarter for the game’s first score. 4 1/2 minutes later, Hunter Pinegar hit the first of his three field goals, this from 21 yards.
Clay Bethard took over for Western the second quarter and threw two touchdown passes, the first to Michael Zachary from 16 yards out with 4:28 to go, the second to Marcell Barbee from midfield with 2:59 to go.
Fort Scott’s only score came with 1:38 left in the half on a 43-yard pass from backup quarterback Justin Agner to Ahmir Mitchell.
Agner played most of the way and completed 12 of 21 passes for 162 yards while starter Gunnar See was 5 of 10 for 21 yards.
Fort Scott finished with 238 yards of total offense but had only 27 total yards after one quarter. Iowa Western had 491 yards of total offense.
The Greyhounds return to Iowa Saturday to face Iowa Central (5-4) at Fort Dodge.
