’Hounds win at Ellsworth in overtime
IOWA FALLS, Iowa — Fort Scott Community College receiver Jon Jiles had one of the biggest days in Greyhound football history here Saturday in FSCC’s 36-30 overtime victory over Ellsworth.
Jiles caught 12 Gunner See passes for 209 yards and three touchdowns, including a game-winning 25-yard haul on the Greyhounds’ first play of their overtime possession. He is the first Fort Scott player since 1996 to have both 200 or more yards and at least 10 receptions in any game, much less in the same game, His 12 catches tied two others for the third-most in a game and his yards tied for second-best.
The winning score came one play after Ellsworth kicker Adijan Muhamedjuic had a 37-yard field-goal attempt blocked in the first half of overtime. Muhamedjuic made only one of four field goals on the day and also had an extra point blocked. His 43-yard attempt with 59 seconds remaining in regulation hit the crossbar and bounced out and he had another kick blocked earlier in the quarter.
Fort Scott improved to 2-4 on the season. As this was not a conference game, the ’Hounds remain 1-4 in the Jayhawk Conference, tied with Coffeyville and Independence for sixth place.
Jiles recorded the game’s first score on a 37-yard reception with 4:37 left in the first quarter. Ellsworth tied it when Lawson Cook returned an interception 95 yards with 1:10 to go.
Muhamedjuic’s only successful field goal, a 46 yarder with 13:27 left in the second quarter, gave the Panthers (1-6) the lead. A 22-yard pass from Byron Jarrett to Tariq Young extended Ellsworth’s lead to 17-7 with 9:52 on the clock..
A high snap in punt formation inside their own 10 led to a Ellsworth fumble that Malcom Martin was credited with recovering in the end zone for Fort Scott with 3:54 to go, bringing the ’Hounds within 3 points.
Jarrett ran in from 2 yards out with 28 seconds to go. Muhamedjuic’s conversion was blocked but the Panthers led 23-14. A penalty enforced on the ensuing kickoff, which resulted in a touchback, gave Fort Scott the ball at the Ellsworth 40. Three plays later, with the snap taking place with one second on the clock, Jiles hauled in a 37-yard Hail Mary pass from See to bring the Greyhounds within two points.
Donte Fils-Aime, who rushed for 84 yards on 24 carries, scored from 2 yards out with 9:24 to go in the third to make it 27-23. The Greyhounds went for the 2-point conversion but were unsuccessful. Dustin Rieser added a 32-yard field goal with 2:30 left to make it 30-23.
With 2:33 remaining in regulation, Ellsworth recovered a fumble in Fort Scott’s end zone and Muhamedjuic’s conversion tied the score at 30-30.
See completed 26 of 55 passes for 319 yards for Fort Scott. Ellsworth had just 279 yards of total offense as a team. The Panthers were held to 66 rushing yards on 33 carries.
This was the first overtime win on the road in Fort Scott history (1-2). Fort Scott is 3-5 overall in overtime games but has won two of its last three such games.
The ’Hounds step back into conference play Saturday when Butler (4-1 KJCCC, 5-2 overall) visits Frary Field for a 7 p.m. contest. The 16th-ranked Grizzlies beat Air Force Prep, 31-15, Saturday at El Dorado.
