Fort Scott High football opened the season with a 23-14 win over Coffeyville in Southeast Kansas League action at Frary Field Friday night as the Tigers gained 328 yards of total offense in building a 23-0 lead.

Matt Campbell threw for 143 yards in his first start at quarterback, although he only completed 7 of 19 passes. Alec Michaud overcame a fumble early in the game to make big plays on both sides of the ball. Immediately after the fumble, he stuck Coffeyville quarterback Jaylen Logan for a 3-yard loss. Later, the Tiger senior rushed for a third-quarter touchdown and his 29-yard run down the right sideline with less than two minutes remaining put the Tigers (1-0) in a position to be able to run out the clock.

“He made some nice plays defensively,” Fort Scott said of his linebacker and running back. “He has a nose for the football. He made some big plays for us on offense.”

Logan rallied his team, which might have been able to make it even closer if not for the occasions in which they shot themselves in the foot. He rushed for a 10-yard scoring run to get the Golden Tornado (0-1) on the board with 2:14 left in the third quarter. C.J. Kelley ran in a 2-point conversion.

Early in the fourth, Coffeyville had a first-and-goal at the 4-yard line. A first-down pass lost a yard. Michaud tackled Brennden Graham for a 2-yard loss on second down. The Nado committed a false start. Then defensive end Logan Hall had a third-down sack for an 8-yard loss and Jarrett Shoe maker had a 12-yard sack on fourth down.

Kelley made an interception late to set the Golden Tornado up at their own 47 with 3:37 to go. With some short completions and a couple of penalties along the way, Logan eventually scored on a draw play from 3 yards out with 1:41 to go. However, the extra point was blocked and then an onside kickoff went out of bounds after only 9 yards.

Michaud ran the ball on the first two plays, the first for 2 yards and the next his big 29-yarder. He finished with 99 yards on 9 carries to lead the Tigers and also had 3 receptions for 81 yards.

All three Tiger scores came at the end of drives of at least 77 yards or longer. Campbell found C.J. Horton in the left side of the end zone from 5 yards out with 1:42 left in the first quarter. Then from the swinging gate, Brody Bowles threw Horton the 2-point conversion pass to make it 8-0.

After the defense forced Logan to fumble on first-and-goal at the one and recovered it at the 2, the Tigers drove 98 yards. The last 33 of those were picked up by Cooper Bradbury on a sensational scoring run in which he broke at least three tackles. Jacob Zubieta’s extra point made it 15-0 with 3:09 left in the first half.

The Tigers took the opening kickoff of the second half at their own 20 and used 12 plays to get score from Michaud, who also made a 24-yard catch during the drive, with 7:16 left in the third. Using the swinging gate again, Nick Lawrence caught the 2-pointer from Bowles, tip-toeing the sideline to keep his feet inbounds.

Fort Scott outgained Coffeyville 328 yards to 263.

The Tigers will travel to Paola next Friday night.
