Eagles, Vikings split in baseball and softball
UNIONTOWN — Northeast split with Uniontown here Thursday in both baseball and softball in Three Rivers League play.
Northeast baseball took game one of its doubleheader, 3-2, but Uniontown won the second game, 9-8.
The Vikings also won the first game of the softball doubleheader while the Eagles took the second. The final score in each game was 4-2.
Baseball: Northeast 3-8, Uniontown 2-9.
The Vikings (6-8 TRL, 6-10) overall) scored all 3 of their runs in the top of the fifth inning while Matt Cashero (2-4) held the Eagles to 3 hits, walked 3 and struck out 10.
Uniontown (9-5, 11-5) scored first when Alec Womelsdorf’s fourth-inning single drove in Nick Hathaway, who walked to lead off the frame.
Dalton Reeves was hit by a pitch leading off the top of the fifth. Cashero singled and Tejay Cleland drove in both runners with a double. Cleland went on to score on B Pryor’s 2-out single.
Chase Fuhrman walked leading off the bottom of the fifth and stole second. Jake Harvey drew a walk and both runners moved up on a wild pickoff throw. Fuhrman scored when the Vikings had to make a play on a dropped third strike to Andrew Reed.
Cleland was 2 for 3 at the plate for Northeast while Womelsdorf and Nick and Graham Hathaway had each of Uniontown’s hits.
Northeast scored twice in the top of the seventh to take an 8-7 lead in game two. Uniontown began its rally with one out in the bottom half of the inning. Ty Davidson reached base with one out on an error and Reed was hit by a pitch. The runners moved up on a steal and G. Hathaway was walked. Davidson tied the score when he ran home on a passed ball. N. Hathaway hit a line-drive single to center to bring in Reed with the winning run.
N. Hathaway was 3 for 5 with 3 RBI for the Eagles while Reed was 2 for 3 and drove in 2.
Cleland was 3 for 4 with 2 RBI for Northeast.
The Vikings host Crest Tuesday while the Eagles will be at home against Pleasanton Thursday.
Softball: Northeast 4-2, Uniontown 2-4.
Uniontown (9-5, 9-5) managed only a split despite collecting 26 hits in the doubleheader.
Rachel Fox (3-4) got the win for the Vikings in game one. She didn’t give up a walk and struck out 2. She also had 2 hits in the lead-off spot. Amber Claffey and Emily Hensley had 2 hits each.
Jacey Brown was 3 for 3 for Uniontown. Mackenzee Woods and Maddie Ard had 2 hits each.
Keeley Goodridge (4-3) allowed 8 hits and walked 4 in game two but also struck out 7. She and Bri Stokes also had 3 hits each.
Allyson Dugan had 3 hits for the Vikings.
Northeast (9-9, 9-9) picked up two more wins on Friday as Altoona-Midway forfeited a make-up doubleheader due to a lack of players. Uniontown’s softball team played a TRL make-up doubleheader Friday at Chetopa.
