Marilyn Ann Prather

Marilyn Ann Prather, 78, Chanute, Kan., passed away on April 22, 2018 surrounded by her loving family at Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center. She was born to Guy Edgar and Mary Leola (Hall) Post in Fort Scott, Kan., on June 23, 1939.

Marilyn was the definition of a classic classy lady. She never went anywhere without being dressed to the nines, even if she was only going to cut firewood with Stephen. She never spoke a harsh word about anyone, accepted all for who they were, and passed no judgement onto others. Marilyn was kind to everyone and would willingly help any who needed it. She volunteered for the food pantry and soup line, where she helped for many years. Marilyn was strong in her faith, and kept a positive attitude about life. She was the best mom to her children, best life partner to Stephen, and best grandma to her grandkids and great grandkids.

She worked for many years as a bank teller at local banks. She worked for 30 years at Bank of Commerce, before moving to Emprise Bank where she worked 17 years before retiring on Dec. 31, 2009. She was so well liked by customers that they would wait in her line just to visit with her, even when there were other lines that were completely empty. When she transferred banks, some of the customers even switched their accounts to the new bank out of their fondness for her.

Marilyn spent 33 years with her life-partner, Stephen. On one of their first dates, he promised her that if she stuck with him, he’d show her the world. He kept that promise and they enjoyed many adventures together, often setting off with no destination in mind, and traveling to their hearts’ desire. They visited all 50 states, several Canadian provinces, put their hands in all the great lakes and oceans, including the Arctic Ocean, visited 29 countries, took numerous cruises.

She will be remembered by all who knew her as the good person we all strive to be, but rarely achieve.
