Viking girls split with Cats

MORAN — Northeast came out on the short end of a high-scoring contest in the first game here Monday but managed to take a split from Marmaton Valley in Three Rivers League play.

The Wildcats won game one 11-10. Northeast took the second game, 8-5, holding off a Wildcat rally in the bottom of the seventh.

The Vikings (2-4 TRL and overall) led 1-0 after their first turn at bat as Rachel Fox hit a leadoff single, moved to second on a passed ball, to third on a ground out and home on a passed ball.

After the Wildcats (3-3, 3-3) tied it in the bottom of the first, the Vikes went on top again in the third. Haley Claffey led off with a single and stole second. Amber Claffey reached base on a dropped third strike. Madison Walker doubled in H. Claffey. Lyndsey Brown singled in A.Claffey and Walker scored on a ground out.

Marmaton Valley scored 2 in the bottom of the third. Northeast responded with 3 in the top of the fourth to make it 7-3. Allyson Dugan led off, walked and stole second. H.Claffey hit a one-out single and moved to second on a passed ball. Fox’s single score Dugan. H.Claffey scored on a groundout. Walker’s single plated Fox.

Marmaton Valley scored 3 in the bottom of the fourth and 2 in the fifth to take an 8-7 lead.

Fox led off the top of the sixth for Northeast with a single to center. She stole second and moved to third on an error. Walker drove her in with a sacrifice fly. Brown and Julia Lopez hit back-to-back singles and scored when the center fielder misplayed Kylee Yarnell’s fly ball.

Marmaton Valley’s Patricia Outlan hit a 3-run home run in the bottom of the sixth, scoring the game-winning run herself.

Fox was 4 for 5 at the plate to lead Northeast’s offense. H.Claffey, Lopez, Brown and Walker had 2 hits each.

Marmaton Valley held a 2-0 lead after three innings of the second game. Northeast scored its first run in the top of the fifth when Yarnell hit a one-out double and scored on an error.

In the sixth, A. Claffey’s double scored Fox, who led off with a walk, to bring the Vikings back within a run at 3-2.

The Vikings scored 6 in the top of the seventh inning to take an 8-3 lead. With one out, Emily Hensley reached base on a dropped third strike. Cassidy Hegeman went in to pinch run. Dugan hit a single to right. A.Claffey’s 2-out double scored Hegeman. Dugan and A.Claffey scored following an error on a ball Walker put into play. She ended up at third and scored later on another error.

Brown singled, then moved to second on a passed ball. H.Claffey’s triple scored Brown and Yarnell’s single brought H.Claffey home.

The Wildcats scored twice in the bottom of the seventh.

Dugan (2-1) allowed 9 hits and 3 walks while striking out one. A.Claffey was 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles while Yarnell was 2 for 3.

Northeast hosts unbeaten Southeast in league action Thursday.
