Greyhound softball goes 3-3 over last 6

After winning nine of their first 11 games versus NJCAA Division II competition this season, Fort Scott Community College’s softball team went just 3-3 over the course of the last week. All six games counted toward Region VI-Division II post season while four of them counted in Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division play.

Wednesday, the Greyhounds splt at Neosho County, winning the opener, 5-0, while the Panthers took the nightcap, 4-1.

Friday at the Betty Ruth Willard Complex, the Greyhounds swept non-conference region opponent Hesston by scores of 3-2 and 5-1.

Saturday at the complex, the ’Hounds were swept by Hutchinson, 2-1 and 11-2.

For the season, the Greyhounds are 3-5 in conference play, 5-5 within the region and 20-11 overall. This is the program’s third 20-win season in the last four years but just the seventh in the program’s 36 seasons of play.

Wednesday: Fort Scott 5-1, Neosho County 0-4.

Abby Cox pitched a 4-hit shutout in the opener for the Greyhounds, walking one and striking out 7. Allie Rooks, Shelby Choate, Mikala Galvin, and Brooklyn Walters each had 2 of Fort Scott’s 10 hits.

The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth inning. Shelby Choate singled to lead off the frame. Wimp and Galvin followed with singles, the latter scoring Choate. Hayley Bledsoe’s single scored Wimp and Galvin to make it 3-0

Choate belted a 2-run home run in the top of the fifth.

Fort Scott’s only run of the second game came in the top of the third, with Choate’s RBI single tying the score.

Friday: Fort Scott 3-5, Hesston 2-3.

The Larks (17-16) led 2-0 in game one until the bottom of the sixth. Galvin drove in 2 runs with a triple and scored on Madison Druse’s one-out single. Galvin, Druse and Brooklyn Walters all had 2 hits.

Cox allowed no earned runs on 5 hits. She didn’t walk anyone and struck out 8,

All of the second-game runs were scored in the first inning. Choate’s double scored Rooks to tie the score. Wimp followed with a 3-run homer to make it 4-1. Galvin singled and later scored on an error.

Tailor Hutsell allowed 4 hits and no walks while striking out 4. Rooks and Wimp had 2 hits each.

Saturday: Hutchinson 2-11, Fort Scott 1-2.

Galvin drove in every Fort Scott run in the doubleheader. She had an RBI triple in the second inning of the opener and a 2-RBI single in the sixth that brought Fort Scott within 4-2 in game two.

Hutchinson improved to 6-4, 8-4, 19-5 with the sweep.
