’Hound women put up fight in first-round loss
KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Fort Scott Community College’s women, the No. 5 seed in the Region VI-Division II post-season tournament, were within one point of fourth-seeded Kansas City Kansas with 3:21 left here Wednesday night. But the Blue Devils outscored the Greyhounds 10-4 down the stretch and held on for a 91-84 victory.
Arikiarra Clark’s jump sot with 3:21 left brought Fort Scott (12-16) within 80-81. But Kansas City (21-10) scored the next 8 points and the ’Hounds didn’t get on the board again until Jada Perry stuck back a teammate’s miss with 42 seconds to go.
Fort Scott scored the game’s first 9 points on its way to a 19-12 lead after one period.
The Greyhounds held a 9-point lead several times in the second quarter, the last at 28-19 after Jade Winter scored a layup with 7:57 to go. Kansas City scored the next 14 points, making it 33-28 with 5:21 to go on a 3-pointer by Miya Ford.
Winter’s layup tied the score at 36-36 with 1:29 on the clock. Clark made a free throw with 1:20 left and a 3-pointer with 52 seconds to go to make put Fort Scott up 40-36. Ford hit another triple to cut the deficit to one point at the half.
Clark’s layup with 7:03 to go made it a 50-43 lead for the Greyhounds. Kansas City scored the next 7 to tie it but another Clark score put the ’Hounds up 52-50.
Ashley Daniels tied it again for Kansas City. But Ally McKenzie broke the tie and Perry scored a layup to make it 56-52 with 3:43 to go.
The lead changed hands eight times and the scored was tied three other times over the next nine-plus minutes. The last time Fort Scott led in the game was 77-76 on Winter’s jumper with 4:51 left in the fourth. Nine seconds later, Nija Collier’s layup gave KCK the lead for good.
Clark scored 27 points to lead Fort Scott on 11-of-18 shooting while Winter added 22 points and Perry finished with 10.
