’Hounds open Region VI play with sweep
HESSTON — Fort Scott Community College’s basketball teams opened Region VI play here Wednesday night, sweeping host Hesston.
The women won convincingly, 85-63. The men won in the game’s final seconds, 68-66.
Andre Nelson stole an inbound pass with 4.9 seconds remaining in the men’s contest and drove in for an uncontested layup with 1.2 seconds left to give the men their sixth straight victory.
Both the men and the women are undefeated in the month of January.
While Hesston is not a Jayhawk Conference member, men’s and women’s games against them count toward seeding in the Region VI Division II post-season tournaments.
Men: Fort Scott 66, Hesston 68.
Nelson led the Greyhounds (1-0 Region VI, 15-6 overall) with 21 points, none more crucial than his final two. He also grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked two shots.
Tyler Zinn and John Montgomery each scored 16 points for Fort Scott. Both handed out 4 assists and Montgomery also had 7 rebounds.
Zac Neely scored 26 points to lead Hesston (0-1, 12-5), making 10 of 16 shots from the field, while also hauling down 12 boards. Cal Hartley added 11 points and Grant Harding scored 10.
The men last lost on Dec. 9 to Central-Columbus, Neb., on the second day of a classic hosted by Southeast.
Women: Fort Scott 85, Hesston 63.
The Greyhounds (1-0, 11-7) trailed after one, 22-16, but outscored Hesston 22-7 in the second quarter and 29-18 in the third.
Fort Scott, which has won its last four games officially (the forfeit from the Sterling JV has been officially been logged as a cancellation by the Jayhawk Conference) shot 47 percent from the field, making 33 of 71 field-goal attempts. Hesston (0-1, 10-9) shot just 33 percent on 22 of 66.
The ’Hounds also dominated the boards, 42-29, with Kamaya Miller bringing 9 down to lead Fort Scott.
Four starters scored in double figures. Akiarra Clark finished with 18 to lead Fort Scott followed by Miller off the bench with 14, Jade Winter with 12 and posts Sarah Kelley and Ally McKenzie with 10 each.
With Sydney Cole adding a season-best 8 points, Fort Scott got 28 points on 11-of-18 shooting from its front-line players while Hesston had just 10.
The last defeat for Fort Scott’s women came on the road at the Washburn University junior varsity on December 13. The ’Hounds have won their last four games (five if one were to count the Sterling JV game as a forfeit rather than a cancellation).
Both Fort Scott teams will be home Saturday when they host Kansas City Kansas in Jayhawk Conference play at Arnold Arena. The women tip off at 2 p.m. followed by the men at 4.
