Montojo fourth at Paola
PAOLA —Fort Scott’s Kyle Montojo finished in fourth place at 126 pounds in the Paola Invitational here Friday.Corbin Shelden placed sixth at 113 and Grayson Quick was eighth at 220.
Montojo pinned Paola’s Tommy Downum in the first round at 126. He then pinned Andrew Park of Lawrence-Free State. He lost to Cael Lynch of Eudora in the semifinals. Montojo then pinned Sylas Stone of Columbus before he was pinned by Paola’s Michael Searcy in the third-place match.
Shelden drew a first-round bye at 113. He was pinned by Paola’s Preston Martin, ranked No. 2 in Class 4A by the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association, in the quarterfinals. He then pinned Javier Osorio of Topeka-Highland Park before getting pinned by Larry Gulley of Eudora. Brody Page of Atchison County pinned Shelden in the fifth-place match.
Quick was pinned by Tyler Huffman of Carl Junction, Mo., in the first round. He then drew two byes before pinning Luis Padilla of Highland Park to advance to the seventh-place match, There he was pinned by Joey Schmidtberger of Lawrence-Free State.
Donald Harper was 0-2 at 106. He lost by technical fall to Kyler Carter of Webb City and was pinned by Maxwell Curry of Highland Park.
Silas Taylor was 1-2 at 132 pounds. He pinned Paola’s Joshua Cline in the first round, then was pinned by Holden Hughes of Carl Junction, Mo., and Gabe Cantu of Bishop Miege.
Will Wunderly was 0-2 at 138 pounds. He was pinned by Keegan Miller of Highland Park in the first round, then drew two byes before being eliminated by pin by Josh Bartlett of Prairie View.
Fort Scott had two wrestlers in the 145-pound bracket. Jacob Zubieta was 0-2, pinned by Angelo Plakio of Highland Park and Jeremiah Mellnick, who was wrestling unattached, which means he was an extra wrestler from his school whose results didn’t count in team scoring.
Jon Daniels was wrestling unattached for Fort Scott at 145 and was also 0-2, pinned by Drew Bollinger of Frontenac and Michael Deichtman of Miege.
Logan Hall was 0-2 at 160, pinned by Sergio Perez of Webb City and Gavin Stark of Paola.
Kaden Primm drew a first-round bye at 170, then went 0-2 as he was pinned by Kobe Maxwell of Carl Junction and Spencer Jackman of Highland Park.
Aaron Emery was 0-2 at 195. He was pinned by Hunter Parish of Basehor-Linwood and Jeffery Schartz of Paola.
