FRONTENAC — Jesse Jones hit a shot with five seconds remaining here Saturday night to give Fort Scott High’s boys a 51-50 over Monett, Mo., and fifth place in the Frontenac Kansas Army National Guard Invitational.

Tiger girls finished seventh after dominating Kansas City-Turner, 52-22.

Monett, the No. 5 seed in the tournament, led 48-43 with about 3 1/2 minutes remaining after Cameron Johnson hit a 3-point shot. But the seventh-seeded Tigers (4-7) scored 8 of the game’s last 10 points, holding the Cubs (6-10) without a field goal the rest of the way.

Nick Lawrence brought the Tigers within 2 with 2:39 to go. The defense held the Cubs but the Tigers had fouls to give and had to commit three before finally getting Gavin Carr to the line with 34 seconds left. He made both free throws but Jessie Lawrence came down and hit a 3-pointer to bring the Tigers within 50-49 with 23 1/2 seconds on the clock.

Carr went to the line again for a one-and-one and missed the shot. Jordan Hall got the rebound, which eventually led to Jones’ game winner.

Hall finished with 20 points, his third outing of 20 or more in his last four games. Lawrence added 11 for the Tigers. Jones was named to the All-Tournament team.

Carr was the only double-figure scorer for Monett with 18 points. He had 13 of those in the first half and didn’t score a field goal in the second.

Pacific, Mo., which beat Fort Scott in Thursday night’s opening round, won the championship by beating Nevada, 59-49. Nevada was the defending champion.

Girls: Fort Scott 52, Kansas City-Turner 42.

Turner (3-9) scored 6 of the game’s first 8 points but were held to 16 the remainder of the contest.

Fort Scott (5-7) scored 12 consecutive points to close out the opening quarter with a 15-6 lead. Madison Cook scored 7 of those points and Ella Beth added the other 5.

The Tigers also scored the first 5 points of the second quarter, expanding the lead to 20-6. It was 32-14 at the half.

Fort Scott used a 9-0 run during the third quarter to make it 40-16 before a late Turner basket to end the period.

Cook’s basket to open the fourth put the running clock into effect. She finished with 25 points and now has 785 as a Tiger. She trails sixth-place Kary Stewart (1993-96) by 30 points on Fort Scott’s all-time scoring list.

Krystian Conway led Turner with 5 points.

Both Fort Scott teams are idle until Friday when they host Girard for Homecoming.
