Pleasanton, Liberal tourney schedules are set
Pre-season tournaments for two of the Tribune Area schools have been seeded and scheduled drawn up. Fort Scott’s teams will play at the Frontenac Kansas Army National Guard Tournament, now in its sixth season, beginning Thursday. Uniontown will take its annual trip to Pleasanton, where the boys’ team will be just one of two with winning records. That tournament will get underway Tuesday. And Northeast will once again play in the Tony Dubray Classic at Liberal, Mo., which begins Monday.
The Frontenac tournament will not be seeded until today at the earliest, most likely Sunday. The Tribune will place the schedule online by Monday and also publish the schedule in the print edition on Wednesday.
Note: Records listed here, when known are as of Wednesday, when the teams were seeded. Many of these teams played Friday night.
Uniontown’s boys are the No. 2 seed at the Pleasanton Mid-Season Tournament, which begins Tuesday while the girls are seeded fourth. Humboldt is the top seed on both brackets.
Eagle boys, 3-4 going into Friday night’s game at Galena, will face seventh-seeded Oswego (0-6) at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday night in the north gymnasium. Uniontown defeated Oswego, 55-30, last Tuesday on the road. Humboldt (6-1) will face Altoona-Midway (0-8) at 4 p.m. in the south gym. Third-seeded Osawatomie (3-5) will take on No. 5 Marmaton Valley (1-5) at 7 p.m. in the south gym. Host Pleasanton (2-5), seeded fourth, will round out the first night of boys’ action by facing off against No. 5 Olathe Heritage Christian at 8:30 in the north gym.
Uniontown’s girls (1-6), who won for the first time this season Tuesday night, will face fifth-seeded Marmaton Valley (1-6) at 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon in the north gym. Marmaton Valley defeated the Eagles in both teams’ season opener at Moran. Humboldt (5-2) will face Altoona-Midway (0-8), which has scored a total of 13 points in its last two games going in to Friday, at 5:30 in the south gym. Second-seeded Pleasanton (4-3) will take on No. 7 Oswego (0-6) at 7 p.m. in the north gym. The final girls’ game pits No. 3 Osawatomie (2-6) against Heritage Christian at 8:30 in the south gym.
Thursday’s schedule will be determined by the outcome of Tuesday night’s games in order to keep both teams from the same school from playing at the same time. Based on the luck of the draw, both Uniontown teams will face either Humboldt or Altoona-Midway Thursday.
Placement games will be played on Friday, with the schedule for that night to be determined to try and keep teams from the same school playing at the same time.
At Liberal, Northeast’s teams play Monday night with the girls (2-6) taking on the host school (5-7) at 7 p.m. Viking boys (4-4) will face Colgan (6-1) at 8:30 p.m. The two games earlier in the day pit Crest’s girls (2-5) against Lockwood, Mo. (7-1) at 4 p.m. and Crest’s boys (2-5) against Joplin Thomas Jefferson at 5:30.
The first round continues on Tuesday beginning with Colgan girls (7-0) facing Bronaugh, Mo. (3-10) at 4 p.m. Galena’s boys (6-2) take on Bronaugh (1-11) at 5:30. Then Galena’s girls (6-2) face Golden City, Mo. (2-8) at 7 p.m. with Golden City boys (5-5) playing Liberal (5-7) at 8:30.
Consolation bracket games will be played Wednesday and Friday. Championship semifinals will take place Thursday with third-place and championship games taking place Saturday.
If Northeast’s boys lose Monday, they’ll face the Crest-TJ loser at 8:30 Wednesday night. If they win, they’ll place the Crest-TJ winner at 8:30 Thursday. Northeast’s girls will play the loser of the Galena-Golden City game at 5:30 Wednesday or the winner of that game at 5:30 Thursday.
