Tiger boys roll past Titans in home opener

Fort Scott High’s boys won their home opener fairly easily over Columbus at the FSHS main gymnasium Friday night, 64-41, behind 15 points from Alec Michaud and 13 from Jordan Hall. The junior duo combined to make 11 of 16 field-goal attempts on the night and Hall also led the Tigers (2-3) with 7 rebounds.
“Early on, (Columbus) did some different things defensively,” Fort Scott head coach Jeff DeLaTorre said. “They played a triangle-and-two for a while and kind of switched it up a little bit. It allowed Alec to have some open looks and knock them down and it got us going. And Jordan did a good job inside attacking the basket.”
Fort Scott scored the game’s first 7 points and 13 of the first 16. Michaud hit a pair of 3-point baskets against the triangle-and-two and Hall followed up a teammate’s miss in transition.
A 5-0 run to end the period, with 4 of those points scored by Matt Campbell, made it a 20-9 lead.
Michaud another 3-pointer early in the second to make it 23-10. It was an odd quarter in which got bogged down by a high number of foul calls. Columbus (2-4) made 8 of 13 free throws in the period but they were only able to get off one field-goal attempt in the entire eight minutes (they missed).
Michaud took a steal in for a layup and Grant Goldston made a 3-pointer with 1:09 to go to make it 32-16. The Titans got one more free throw before the half.
“We had four guys with two or three fouls in the first half,” DeLaTorre said. “It was nice to see guys like Carter Goldston play in the second quarter and part of the third while those guys were in foul trouble.
“I felt like we kind of weathered a storm a little bit and kept our lead comfortable and then we were able to take it from there.”
A 13-2 run to end the third quarter made it 52-26. Jesse Jones, unable to score in the first half, scored 8 points in the third to aid the Tigers.
Although the lead never got large enough (30 point) to put the mercy clock rule into effect, DeLaTorre was still able to give some junior varsity players quality time in the final three minutes. A 3-pointer by C.J. Horton made it 63-35 with 3:43 to go.
Of the nine players who scored for the Tigers, six scored at least 6 points including Jones (8), Jessie Lawrence (8), Horton (6) and Campbell (6).
Fort Scott shot 44 percent from the field, making 25 of 57 field-goal attempts. Columbus shot 31 percent on 11 of 36 but was only 3 of 8 at the half — all three field goals made by Patrick Cassidy, who led the Titans with 9 points.
Columbus won the battle of the boards, 34-32. Campbell and J. Lawrence each added 5 boards to the total.
The Tigers turned the ball over 13 times to Columbus’ 21. Fort Scott had 12 steals with Michaud picking up 3.
The Tigers handed out 11 assists with Jones and J. Lawrence dishing 3 each. Columbus only had 3 assists as a team.
Fort Scott steps back into Southeast Kansas League play Tuesday night to close out the pre-holiday part of its schedule. Labette County, ranked No. 8 in Class 4A-Division I by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association, will be the visitor. The Grizzlies (2-0 SEK, 4-1 overall) took a 59-48 win at Chanute Friday night.
