ARMA — Northeast’s boys got their first win of the season in dynamic fashion here Wednesday night, going out to a 25-0 lead on their way to a 67-25 shellacking of visiting Bronaugh.

Northeast’s girls suffered their third consecutive defeat after a rally in the final two minutes came up short and fell to Bronaugh, 39-36.

Viking boys (1-4) caused 14 turnovers in the first quarter and held the Wildcats scoreless until Kyle Harrell made two free throws with 41 seconds remaining. John Million hit Bronaugh’s first field goal on just four attempts with three seconds left when he took a steal in for a layup.

Eight Vikings scored at least two points during the game-opening run. Matt Cashero and Corbin Moore each scored 6. Tejay Cleland and Nathen Boswell each added 4.

“Getting Matt Cashero back was big for us,” Northeast head coach Russ Cramer said. “He came in and gave us some energy that we needed and all of our guys stepped up and played with some more confidence tonight.”

Only seven players dressed for the Wildcats. Five of the are freshmen and four of them were in the starting lineup.

The Vikings extended the lead by scoring the first 14 points of the second quarter, making it 37-5 with 3:40 to go. They also scored the final 6 points of the half to go into the locker room up 45-9.

After scoring the first 10 points of the third, the lead was 55-9. The Vikings dialed back the pressure a bit and Bronaugh was finally able to score here and there. But the period ended with a 64-20 advantage for Northeast and the entire fourth quarter was played with a running clock.

Cleland led the Vikings with 15 points and also had 7 rebounds. Cashero and Moore each added 14 points. Harrell led Bronaugh with 11 points.

Northeast shot 55 percent from the field, making 28 of 51 field-goal tries and outrebounded Bronaugh, 34-21. The Wildcats, who were 3 for 10 at the half, finished at 29 percent on 8 of 28.

Girls: Bronaugh 39, Northeast 36.

Many of the same problems that have plagued the Vikings (1-4) this season reared their head again Wednesday night. The Vikings committed 20 turnovers and were called for 28 fouls. The latter number led to Bronaugh making 21 of 45 free-throw attempts.

Northeast forced 27 turnovers but didn’t score enough from them and was only 13 of 25 at the free-throw line. They were also outrebounded, 40-31.

The Vikings scored 5 of the game’s first 6 points but Bronaugh tied the score at the end of the first on a jumper by Bailey Cliffman. It took a 3-pointer by Brittney Wyland with 48 seconds left to get Northeast back within 12-10 at the half.

Bronaugh led 24-20 after three and had the lead up to 34-26 with 2:07 to go.

Jaidan Davis and Rachel Fox connected on back-to-back 3-pointers and Emily Watson hit a jumper with 54 seconds remaining that tied the game at 34-34. The Wildcats made five free throws in the final 48 seconds to just two for Northeast, which wasn’t able to get a potential game-tying 3-point shot launched before the final buzzer.

Fox and Watson each scored 8 points for Northeast. Mattie Earnest led Bronaugh with 13.

Northeast’s teams are idle until Friday, Jan. 5 when they open Three Rivers League play with a doubleheader against Crest in Colony.
