’Hound men beat Washburn JV; women swept in season series
TOPEKA — Fort Scott Community College’s men took an 89-77 win over the Washburn University junior varsity here Monday night. But the women’s team lost by a 78-55 score as the Ichabods completed a season sweep of the series.
Tyler Zinn scored 29 points for Greyhound men (9-7) while Daemar Jones and Jayden Davis each added 14 and Andre Nelson chipped in with 12. JoBriel Powell led Washburn with 24 points with Tommy Eckart adding 23.
Fort Scott, which led 58-35 at the half, shot 57 percent from the field, making 34 of 60 field-goal attempts, including 13 of 22 from 3-point range. Washburn shot 47 percent overall on 31 of 66 and made 11 of 29 3-pointers.
Zinn also had 8 steals and 6 assists. George Brocato handed out 10 assists.
Fort Scott’s men are idle until Friday, Jan. 12 when they face Penn Valley on the first night of a classic at Kansas City Kansas. The next day, the ’Hounds will take on Strength-N-Motion Prep.
Women: Washburn JV 78, Fort Scott 55.
Washburn won more convincingly than it did at Arnold Arena on Dec. 5 when the Ichabods took a 67-50 victory.
Fort Scott (7-7), which is just 4-3 versus JV teams this season, led 12-7 after one period but was outscored over the second and third by a combined 51-30.
Olivia Montague led Washburn with 15 points while Adyson Narber added 13.
Coleen Smith led Fort Scott off the bench with 15 points while Arkiarra Clark added 12.
The next game for FSCC is at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13 against the Sterling JV.
