FSCC men roll by Washburn JV, 87-51
Fort Scott Community College’s men came out blazing at the start of each half as the Greyhounds rolled to an 87-51 win over the Washburn University junior varsity at Arnold Arena Tuesday night.
The ’Hounds (8-5) shot 58 percent from the field in the contest, making 36 of 67 total field-goal attempts and 10 of 23 from 3-point range.
Each of the nine players who were dressed for Fort Scott scored at least 3 points.
Fort Scott rolled out to an 8-1 lead as Daemar Jones scored 4 of those points. Washburn made only one of its first 13 shots from the field as the ’Hounds went out 19-6 after 10 minutes.
A 9-0 run late in the half capped by a driving basket from Andre Nelson made it 31-12. At that point, the Ichabods had made only 3 of 17 fielders
Jayden Davis made a 3-point play for the Greyhounds with 30 seconds to go and Tyler Zinn took a steal in for a layup with four seconds to go to make it a 40-24 halftime lead.
Dontrell Sanders scored the first two baskets of the second half, Donnie Flowers scored in transition, and Zinn scored the last pair of buckets as the Greyhounds hit on 5 of their first 7 shots of the second half, making it 50-24 with 17:50 to go.
Near the end of the contest, Fort Scott went on a 17-2 run with 5 points from Nelson and 5 more from Zinn that made it 85-46 with 1:47 to go.
Zinn led the Greyhounds with 22 points but adapted his game to the Washburn defense. Normally one to hit from the outside, Zinn’s first five baskets came on drives to the hoop and he finished 7 of 8 from two-point range. He also had 4 assists, 3 steals and 3 rebounds.
Flowers made 7 of 10 shots from the field on his way to a 14-point, 8-rebound night. Nelson finished with 12 points and 5 rebounds while Davis went 4 of 6 from the floor for 12 points of his own and 6 rebounds.
Tommy Ekart led Washburn with 14 points. No other Ichabod had more than 9.
The Greyhounds won the battle of the boards, 43-35, as Sanders came down with 12 rebounds. George Brocato handed out 6 of the team’s 16 assists. Marshawn Williams picked up 5 steals.
This was Fort Scott’s third straight victory. The first two wins in the streak came in Labette’s classic over the weekend at Parsons, the details of which can be seen here.
The Greyhounds will play in another classic this weekend. They’ll go to Beatrice, Neb. for Southeast Community College’s event. They’ll face the host school at 8 p.m. Friday night and Central-Columbus at 2 p.m. Saturday.
