FSMS wrestlers conclude season at Parsons

PARSONS —The second season for the Fort Scott Middle School interscholastic wrestling program concluded with a tournament at Parsons on Saturday.

There was a special moment during the day. Fort Scott’s Kyle Mitchell was involved. For those who have seen videos of football teams and basketball teams putting a special player into the game as everyone on both sides cheering for them, this was that kind of a moment.

“Kyle Mitchell had the opportunity to take first place Saturday with a win in his final match of the day,” FSMS head coach Alvin Metcalf said. “Kyle gave up that medal for a second-place medal to give a young man from Chanute, Brock Small, with Down Syndrome a win. Kyle made sure the match went all three periods and gave Brock the win with a decision, 13-10.

“This is what the sport of wrestling is about, it’s not the wins or losses, but the values, kindness, and the right thing to do. Kyle Mitchell is a special person in a lot of ways, and this is just one of way he shows how special he really is.”

Bracket champions were Bryce Guss, 85 pounds; Calo Roberts, 92 lbs.; Caden Young, 104; Garrett Seely, 107; Scott Tome, 116; Kolby Shoemaker, 117; Jacob Stinnett, 120; Dominik Bishop, 145; and Braydon Haueneschild, 151.

Runners-up, in addition to Mitchell at 114 pounds were Avious Steadman, 107, and Alex Heaton, 109. Third-place finishers were Andrew Grimm, 116; David Jones, 134; Austin Alvares, 134; Jordon Johnson, 145; Dylan Pinkerton, 151; Xation Watkins, 158; Nick Herring, 165; Kaden Connor, 173; Langdon Giddens, 204. Fourth-place finishers were Drayden Fly, 94; Hunter Wooldridge, 95; Gage Fiegener, 95; Marquinn Johnson, 143; and Taylor Parsons, 151.
