Fort Scott Community College’s men had to hold off a pesky Bacone junior varsity team on the first night of the Gladbach Classic Friday night at Arnold Arena, 89-81.

The Greyhounds (4-3) led by 13 at the half, 46-33, after three consecutive 3-pointers to end the period. Tyler Zinn hit from the left wing with 47 seconds remaining. Then Jayden Davis hit back-to-back threes, the second at the buzzer from the left sideline.

But the Warriors got within 4 points with 3:11 remaining in the game after Tyson Tiger converted a teammate’s steal into a layup to cut the deficit to 74-70. That closed out a just-over-eight-minute stretch during which Bacone trimmed the margin from 17 points, 64-47, with 11:47 left, outscoring Fort Scott 23-10.

One thing that might have prevented Bacone from scoring an upset was its poor free-throw shooting. The Warriors made only 6 of 14 attempts in the second half and finished the night 13 of 27 from the charity stripe.

Dontrell Sanders’ fast-break layup with exactly three minutes to go got the ’Hounds going again. The Warriors never got closer than 5 points after that.

Davis led the Greyhounds with 20 points as he made 8 of his 10 field-goal attempts, going 4 of 5 from three. Daemar Jones followed with a 14-point performance on 7-of-10 shooting. Zinn finished with 12 points and led the team in rebounds with 8. Dontrell Sanders had 11 points. Marshawn Williams handed out 8 assists.

Ahjae Johnson led Bacone with 15 points. Joe Greaves had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The Warriors tied the game several times early on, the last at 16-16 with 12:18 to go in the first half. But that was during a 12-3 run that gave the ’Hounds a 24-16 lead with 9:43 to go.

The last five baskets of the half for Fort Scott were threes. Davis, then Zinn hit back-to-back triples to make it 37-34 with 2:47 left but Bacone scored the next 4 before the ’Hounds got that half-ending flurry.

Labette’s men face the Ottawa University junior varsity in the afternoon men’s game and won 113-67 to improve to 5-3. Justin Newman came off the bench to lead the Cardinals with 19 points. Virgil Lackey and Kashawn Charles each added 16 points. Those three combined to make 19 of 34 field-goal tries.

The classic concludes today with Labette facing the Bacone JV at 2 p.m. and the Greyhounds facing Ottawa’s JV at 6 p.m.
