’Hound women dominate second half vs. Bacone

Fort Scott Community College’s women dominated the second half of their game versus the Bacone College junior varsity on the first night of the Gladbach Classic at Arnold Arena, going on to win 80-50.
Good thing they did, too. Because the Greyhounds didn’t have a great first half and had to score the last 4 points of the second quarter just to get within 2 points at the break.
But everything that didn’t work for Fort Scott in the first half —shooting, ball control, free throws — got much better in the second half. The ’Hounds outscored the Warriors 51-19 in the second half.
Fort Scott (4-3) never led by more than 3 points during the first half. The Greyhounds got up 9-6 with four minutes left in the first quarter but ended up trailing 13-12 at the end of it.
The ’Hounds led 19-16 with 5:52 to go in the second quarter. But Bacone scored 15 of the next 21 — Fort Scott’s 6 points were all free throws — and held a 31-25 lead with one minute to go following Erica Baker’s 3-point goal.
Jasmin Polk and Uniontown graduate Shalina Harper scored Fort Scott’s last hoops of the half to get within 31-29.
The Greyhounds came out of the locker room and went on a 12-2 run with Jada Perry scoring the last 4 to make it 41-33 with 6:30 left. Torie Jennings scored The Warriors’ first basket of the half, snapping an 0-for-5 start, and Jasmine Cooks hit a 3-point goal. But Fort Scott was able to stop the run with Arkiarra Clark scoring a layup to spark a 16-2 run over the next five minutes to make it 57-40.
Emily Basks hit a 3-point shot for Bacone to close out the period. Then Jerimontie Hester scored a basket to open the fourth quarter for the Warriors, making it 57-45.
But the Greyhounds didn’t allow Bacone another field goal the rest of the game, forcing the Warriors to miss their final 15 shots from the floor. Kamaya Miller converted a 3-point play to start an eight-minute stretch in which Fort Scott outscored Bacone 21-2, the last 11 without any response from the opposition.
Fort Scott made 19 of 33 fielders in the second half to finish the night 28 of 62, 45 percent, even after going just 1 for 14 from 3-point range. Bacone went 5 for 30 in the second half and 16 for 67, 24 percent, for the game.
Six-one forward Ally McKenzie, who scored Fort Scott’s only 3-pointer, led the ’Hounds with 13 points. Six-one center Sarah Kelley added 11 and Miller finished with 10. Baker led Bacone with 11 points.
After making just 10 of 18 free-throws in the first half, Fort Scott made 8 of 11 in the third quarter and finished 23 of 38.
Fort Scott outrebounded Bacone, 49-43, with Jade Winter grabbing 8 of her game-high 13 boards in the second half. The Fort Scott defense forced 33 turnovers but the ’Hounds committed 24 themselves.
Winter and Perry each handed out 4 of Fort Scott’s 15 assists. Perry and Cameron Wilson each had 4 of the team’s 22 steals.
Jayhawk Conference rival Labette won Friday’s classic-opening game against Cottey College, 82-41, behind a 20-point effort from DeAisha Young. The Cardinals (6-0) led 23-7 after one period of play and 50-17 at the half.
Destiney Teniente, one of three Comets from San Antonio, led Cottey (0-3) with 16 points. No one else had more than 7 points for the Comets, who have just six players.
Labette takes on Bacone this afternoon at 12 noon. The Greyhounds will play Cottey at 4 p.m.
Wednesday: Fort Scott 79, Sterling JV 63.
Fort Scott got back to the .500 level with this win at Sterling. Ally McKenzie and Uniontown freshman Shalina Harper each scored 12 points for the Greyhounds. Harper made 4 of 5 shots from 3-point range. Jade Winter added 10 points.
The ’Hounds led 16-12 after one quarter and 39-26 at the half. They added 29 points in the third in extending the lead to 68-47.
