ONLINE FIRST: De Soto rolls by Tigers in Sectional
DE SOTO — De Soto scored twice quickly in the first 2 1/2 minutes of play here Friday night and the Wildcats never let up, going on to a 49-13 victory over Fort Scott High in a Class 4A-Division I Sectional Playoff Game.
The Tigers, who didn't get on the board until the fourth quarter, finished their season at 8-3.
Exavier Jackson scored when he intercepted a pass on the second play of the game and returned it 44 yards to the end zone just 45 seconds into the contest. The Tigers punted on their second possession but Brayden Brummer's 24-yard return set up quarterback Bryce Mohl's 20-yard keeper on the Wildcats' first offensive play of the night, making it 14-0 with 9:29 on the clock.
Mohl went on to complete 5 of 6 passes for 180 yards and four touchdowns for De Soto (9-2), which gets the challenge of facing three-time defending champion Bishop Miege at home next Friday in Sub-State. Miege (11-0) defeated Labette County, 69-23.
Jesse Jones connected with Matt Campbell from 21 yards out with 10:43 left in the game to get the Tigers on the board. The snap went awry on the extra point.
Zarek Fewell got into the end zone on a 7-yard run with 29 seconds let. His 34th touchdown of the season put him into a tie for second place on the Southeast Kansas League's single-season touchdown scoring list with 34. Matt Bromley also scored 34 touchdowns for Independence in 2010.
Fewell also finished the second with 210 total points as he also had three 2-point conversions during the season, putting him in second place on the SEK single-season list in that category. Current Kansas State running back Alex Barnes holds both records, scoring 38 touchdowns and 238 total points for Pittsburg in 2014.
More detail on this game will be provided in Wednesday's print edition.
