’Hounds fall in overtime
HIGHLAND — Fort Scott Community College’s football team remained winless on the road this season following a 27-21 overtime loss to Highland in Jayhawk Conference play here Saturday afternoon.
Scotties’ quarterback Narcissus Driver rolled around the left end on Highland’s possession from 4 yards out to end the game. The Scotties (2-4 Jayhawk, 3-5 overall) held the Greyhounds scoreless in the first half of overtime.
The Greyhounds are 1-4 in the conference, seventh in the eight-team league ahead of only Dodge City, and 3-5 overall. But they’re 0-4 on the road and have their last five away from home overall. Their last road victory was at Ellsworth on October 22 of last season.
Driver rushed for 76 yards on 16 carries and scored three times, making up for a 5-for-18, 29-yard throwing day. He scored the Scotties’ first touchdown on a 3-yard run with 6:51 left in the opening quarter. Tra Barrett made it 14-0 on a 71-yard punt return less than two minutes later.
Fort Scott got on the board on a 10-yard pass from Garrett Sharp to Edward Aldred with 9:45 left in the first half. The ’Hounds tied the score late in the third on Sharp’s 4-yard keeper.
Driver scored from 21 yards out with 12:08 left in the game to put Highland in front again. Sharp found Jaylan Jenkins on a 24-yard scoring pass with 4:56 left to tie the score at 21-21.
Sharp completed 20 of 42 passes for 223 yards and also rushed for 59 yards on 22 carries. Aldred caught 6 passes for 47 yards while Kyle Harrison hauled on 5 for 65 yards.
Raekwon Morgan led the Greyhound defense with 11 tackles. Dominic Cizauskas added 10 tackles and Tyson Curry made 9 stops, all solos. Jeremiah Hill made 18 tackles to lead the Highland defense.
Fort Scott had 337 yards in total offense on 87 plays, an average of 3.9 yards per play. Highland gained just 255 yards in total offense but had a higher average, 4.9, on 52 plays.
The Greyhounds play their last road game of the season Saturday afternoon at Hutchinson. The Jayhawk Conference contest will kick off at noon. Last Saturday, the Blue Dragons (3-2, 6-3) lost at Independence, 24-19, in a game that didn’t kick off until 9:30 p.m. due to Neewollah festivities at the stadium. The Pirates (5-0, 7-1) who moved up one spot to No. 5 in the NJCAA football poll released on Tuesday, clinched at least a share of their first conference championship since 1977 with the victory while Hutch slipped to fourth place, a half-game behind Butler and Garden City, which are tied for second at 4-2 (Butler is 7-2 overall, Garden City 6-3).
NOTES — This was the second overtime game of the season for the Greyhounds, who beat Iowa Central, 26-17, at Frary Field on October 7 in a game in which Fort Scott scored in both halves of overtime. Brody Southwell kicked a field goal in the “top” half and Jordan Griffin returned an interception 100 yards for a touchdown in the other half.
Fort Scott is 2-5 all time in overtime games. Their only other OT win came on Oct. 21, 2000, against Hutchinson. The Greyhounds won that day, 38-35, in double overtime. They lost their next four OT games before beating Iowa Central….
