Tigers split at LC, host Sub-State today
ALTAMONT — Fort Scott High’s volleyball team managed to get a big win over Southeast Kansas League champion Independence here Tuesday night as league and regular-season play concluded at Labette County High School.
The Tigers (3-9 SEK, 14-21 overall) defeated Independence, 25-21, 30-28 as Kharsyn Dwyer collected 5 kills and Addi Lyons handed out 7 assists.
“We played very poised against Indy,” Fort Scott head coach Carol Sampson said. “The passers were spot on with passes, which made the setters’ job easy. And we got some big kills from all the hitters. Kharsyn and Adi were beasts on the front line. Kharsyn had some huge blocks which really gets the team fired up. It was a great match.”
Host Labette County (7-5, 23-14) took a 25-18, 25-12 win. The Grizzles have won seven of their last nine matches, one of which was over Independence at a tournament at Anderson County on October 14. This rolls comes despite the loss of two starters due to injuries.
“Labette came out fired up,” Sampson said. “They have some big hitters and strong girls. We were always just a step behind compared to out match against Indy. But we will be ready for Saturday. We are looking forward to playing them again.”
Fort Scott hosts a Class 4A-Division I Sub-State Tournament this afternoon in the new gymnasium on campus. Play begins at 2 p.m. with a match between fourth-seeded Coffeyville (8-23) and top seed Indy (33-4). Fort Scott and LCHS will meet in the second match. The winners of the first two matches will battle for the right to go to the State Tournament at some time around 4 p.m.
