Tigers get 6 scores from backfield duo

Saturday, October 7, 2017

COFFEYVILLE — Fort Scott High’s starting backfield of Zarek Fewell and Jessie Lawrence combined for 320 yards and six scores here Friday night as the Tigers rolled past Coffeyville, 48-21, in their Southeast Kansas League finale for the season.

Fewell scores put him at 16 touchdowns for the season, the most in the SEK this season, while Lawrence now has six scores. Meanwhile, quarterback Jessie Jones threw for 121 yards and a touchdown on 7-of-11 passing.

For the game, the Tigers (4-1 SEK, 4-2 overall) rushed for 314 of their 435 total yards. Since the beginning of the 1996 season, Fort Scott is 40-0 when rushing for 300 or more yards and 44-1 when it gains 400 or more yards in total offense.

The Tigers scored on each of their five first-half possessions. The first one came just one play after Coffeyville (1-1, 3-3) punted at the end of its first possession when Fewell scampered 70 yards to the end zone. Juba Foul’s extra point kick came with 9:49 on the clock.

Alec Michaud’s interception led to score No. 2, a one-yard run for Lawrence with 5:54 to go in the first quarter that was set up by his on 12-yard gain on the play before.

Fewell scored again on a 13-yard run with 3:49 left in the first to make it 21-0. Jones found Jarrett Shoemaker for a 29-yard gain to the Coffeyville 19 on the first play of the drive. Fewell carried on the last two plays of the drive.

Jaylen Logan, who went in at quarterback for Coffeyville after starter C.J. Kelley apparently suffered an injury on Fewell’s score, scrambled 38 yards to get the Golden Tornado on the board with 2:16 left in the period. The Nado went for 2 points out of the swinging gate and were not successful.

Lawrence ripped off a 64-yard run to get the ball down to the Coffeyville 19 after a chop block on the previous play pushed the ball back to Fort Scott’s 17. He scored eight plays later on a 2-yard run on fourth-and-goal with 8:48 left in the half, pushing the lead to 28-6.

Jacob Jackson scored on a 4-yard run with 5:52 left in the half for Coffeyville. Trey Myrie scored the 2-point conversion to bring the Tornado within 28-14.

Fort Scott drove 95 yards after a muff on the ensuing kickoff forced them to take possession at their own 5. Eleven plays later, with 18 seconds on the clock, Jones connected with Ty Gorman from 26 yards out and Foul’s kick made it 35-14, which stood up as the halftime margin.

Midway through the third, the Tigers blocked a Coffeyville punt. After the play, two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties put the ball at the Coffeyville 11. Fewell gained 10 yards on the next play, then ran in from one yard out with 5:20 to go to make it 41-21 after the extra point failed.

Lawrence scored early in the fourth on a 35-yard run and Foul’s extra point with 10:19 left made it 48-21.

Logan scored on a four-yard run as time wound down.

Shoemaker led Tiger receivers with 39 yards on 2 catches. Matt Campbell had 30 yards on 3 receptions.

Logan rushed for 106 yards on 15 carries for Coffeyville and also threw for 76 yards. Jackson had 103 yards on 19 carries.

Class 4A-Division I District 3 play begins Friday night at Frary Field with a 7 p.m. contest versus Louisburg (5-1).
