’Hounds get first win for Pick, 26-16

Tuesday, October 3, 2017

After consecutive bye weeks, Fort Scott Community College’s football team finally got its first win for rookie head coach Kale Pick Saturday night, beating Coffeyville 26-16 in a Jayhawk Conference game at Frary Field.

Pick, said to be the youngest head coach at any level of college football, saw his team go up 20-0 before Coffeyville got on the board late in the second quarter.

With the win, the Greyhounds broke a six-game losing streak, having not won since beating Ellsworth on the road on Oct. 22 of last season. They also broke a seven-game losing streak against Coffeyville, a seven-game conference losing streak and a four-game home losing streak.

Dalton Sneed threw for 235 yards on 22-of-36 passing and also rushed for 109 yards on 21 carries. The Greyhounds (1-2 conference, 1-3 overall) used an offense which featured backup quarterback Garrett Sharp and wide receiver Darious Abrams as running backs. In fact, it was Sharp who threw for the first score of the game when he took a pitch from Sneed, rolled right and then passed to Kyle Harrison from 12 yards out with 9:56 left in the first quarter.

Abrams ran the ball over the line from one yard out on the next possession to make it 14-0 with 3:26 to go in the first quarter. From that point on, the Greyhounds were limited to field goals but Fort Scott High graduate Brody Southwell connected on four of them from 26, 33, 35 and 29 yards out. The first two came in the second quarter and extended the lead to 20-0.

Cooper Lee kicked a field goal for Coffeyville with 3:44 on the clock. Southwell hit his 35-yarder with 59 seconds left to make it 23-3 at the break.

The Red Ravens (1-2, 1-4) were limited on offense as its top three quarterbacks were either injured or suspended. They started defensive end Aaron Ortiz at quarterback and also used freshman Aloyous Jackson, who had been used exclusively in Wildcat formations and hadn’t yet thrown a pass this season.

The Ravens’ first touchdown came on special teams as Valgene Jones picked up a blocked punt at the 8-yard line and walked into the end zone with 7:54 left in the third.

Southwell kicked his fourth field goal with 4:17 on the clock to make it 26-16.

Justin Henderson took the ball over the goal line from 6 yards out for Coffeyville with 49 seconds left in the third to bring his team within 26-16. Lee missed a 34-yard field goal early in the fourth that would have brought the Ravens within a touchdown.

The Greyhound defense held Coffeyville to 14 total yards the rest of the game as the Red Ravens were unable to pass with any efficiency. They used Jackson when they needed accuracy and Ortiz when they were looking to go deep. Neither were able to do the job.

Fort Scott gained 553 yards in total offense, 247 through the air. Coffeyville had only 238 yards of total offense and didn’t get its first first down until the second quarter. Henderson led the Ravens with 71 yards on 12 caries. Wynton Ruth added 69 yards on 10 carries.

Jackson completed 9 of 17 passes for just 74 yards. Ortiz was 2 of 9 for 18 yards.

The Greyhounds will host Iowa Central at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Tritons are 0-6 this season and have lost 14 consecutive games to Kansas schools.
