Fort Scott High’s girls finished second in their home tennis invitational Tuesday and had a champion entry in No. 2 doubles.

“The girls had a good tournament in our only home match of the season,” Fort Scott head coach Lynn Barr said. “They should be very proud of the way they competed. Everyone played some good tennis and everyone placed.”

Aubry Terry and Abbie Houston won all three matches in No. 2 doubles to take the title in that pool. They defeated Independence’s Anna Howard/Kristina Morrison, 8-6, in their first match. Then they rolled through a pair of 8-1 wins over Aubri Stewart/Josie Lynn of Labette County and Gentry Westervelt/Anistyn Schultz of Columbus.

Madi Larson had to overcome a bout of illness to finish second in No. 1 singles. She lost to Amanda Trout of Independence, 8-4, but defeated Natalie Woolfolk of Columbus, 8-4, and Jaden Spainhower of Columbus, 8-3.

Alexis Bailey (2-5) finished second in No. 2 singles. She lost in the first round to Indy’s Meredith Campbell, 8-0. She took 8-4 wins over Jaelynn Largent of LCHS and Avery Campbell of Columbus.

Britni Addington and Patience Richwine were second in No. 1 doubles. They suffered an 8-2 loss to Indy’s Emma Jonhson/Tia Gregory but beat LC’s Aubry Case/Raelee Moore, 8-2, and Columbus’ Macy Gray/Haddie Gideon, 8-1.

The Tigers also played in the Pittsburg Invitational on Thursday, where they finished sixth out of eight teams. Fort Scott was placed in a pool with Lamar, Mo., Labette County and Iola. The Tigers all beat Lamar but struggled with the other teams

Larson (10-8) defeated Lamar’s Morgan Brisbin, 8-2, but lost to Maddison Fischer of Blue Valley Southwest, 8-0, Paige Burleigh of LCHS, 8-5, and Allie Utley of Iola, 8-2.

Shaylee Terry (1-3) played her first singles matches of the season in the No. 2 position. She defeated Kyndyl Tuck of Lamar, 8-6, and lost to Sadie Putman of Blue Valley Southwest, 8-1, Natalie Woolfolk of Labette County, 8-3, and Erin Klubek of Iola in a tie-breaker, 8-7 (2).

Addington and Richwine (10-8) defeated Taylor Darrow and Alsira Jaurez of Lamar, 8-5, and lost to Emily Ervin/Chloe Shi of BVSW, 8-3, Laney and Lexi Baughman of LCHS, 8-1, and Macayla Bycroft/Gabby Richards of Iola, 8-6.

Houston and Abubry Terry (5-6) defeated Lamar’s Kiersten Mahurin/Diana Olteanu, 8-1, and lost to Kayla Webb/Taylor Brinbaum of BVSW, 8-5, Aubrey Case/Ralee Moore of LCHS, 8-5, and Carlie Payne/Jennifer Tidd of Iola, 8-3.

“I was really proud of the way the girls competed,” Barr said. “It was a tough tournament, a long day of play with our final match ending shortly before 10 and the kids played hard all the way through.”

The Tigers are idle until Saturday, Sept. 30, when the Southeast Kansas League Tournament will be held at Chanute.
