CHANUTE — Senior Zarek Fewell rushed for 301 yards and three touchdowns here Friday night in leading Fort Scott High to a 34-13 win over Chanute in Southeast Kansas League action.

The Tigers (3-0) rushed for 441 yards. Fewell’s effort surpassed any in the past 21 seasons. Previously B.J. Pruitt rushed for 279 yards in a victory over Topeka-Highland Park on Sept. 11, 1998. Fewell’s previous best was a 231-yard effort against Chanute last season. This was his second 200-yard game and the ninth by a Tiger since the 1996 season.

After Chanute’s opening drive stalled near midfield, it took Fewell only two plays to break free on a 48-yard run to give the visitors the early 7-0 lead.

It was a lead which Fort Scott never surrendered the remainder of the night and and the game was never really in doubt.

Early in the second quarter, Fewell added his second score. This one was from 30 yards out.

After a quick three-and-out, Fort Scott found themselves driving, but this time, the Chanute defense was up to the challenge.

Sophomore defensive back Briley Peavy intercepted a pass, but again, it was a quick three-and-out for Chanute (0-1, 1-2).

The Tigers’ running game was full steam ahead on the next possession. This time, it was Jessie Lawrence who took the ball 58 yards to the house with 5:10 remaining in the second quarter.

Chanute’s offense started moving the ball late, but the drive appeared to come to a stop deep inside Fort Scott territory. However, the Blue Comets converted the fourth-down attempt to get the ball down to the 1-yard line.

On the ensuing play, senior fullback Gage Leedy pounded the ball up the middle, putting Chanute on the scoreboard just before half.

Coming out of halftime, the Blue Comets caught Fort Scott off guard with an onside kick, but the drive didn’t make it past the Tiger 29-yard line.

Four minutes later, Fewell capped off the Fort Scott drive with a 20-yard run untouched to the end zone, his 11th touchdown of the season.

The score remained 28-7 until the 7:41 mark in the fourth quarter when Fort Scott scored its fifth rushing touchdown of the game.

Like late in the first half, Chanute’s offense responded and junior quarterback Corbett Kimberlin connected with sophomore Tyler Davis to keep the drive alive on a 3-and-17, and a minute later, he found senior Matt Hernandez on a 19-yard pass completion in the end zone.

Fort Scott hosts Pittsburg in its Homecoming game Friday night at Frary Field.
