Alberta Marie Steeley

Alberta Marie Steeley, 82, passed away at her home in Kansas City, Mo., on Tuesday July 18, 2017. Most of her family was by her side.

Born on Feb. 27, 1935 in Garland, Kan., Alberta is the daughter of Vernie Totman and Ethel Pearl Scratcher Totman. She was preceded in death by husbands Cecil Boyd Steeley and George Albert Hamman. Alberta was the last surviving sibling, preceded in death by her two sisters Margaret More and Phyllis Riley, one brother, Eldon Pete Totman, all of Fort Scott, Kan., and several beloved pets including Henry.

Alberta will be terribly missed by her five children, Randy Kent Hamman (Susan) of Wichita Falls, Texas, Ronda Sue DeMint (David) and Tina Rene Wardlow (Steve) of Leavenworth, Kan., Charles Vernon Steeley (Audrey) of Bates City, Mo., and Cecilia Marie Steeley (Cordin R. Bryars) of Kansas City, Mo. Also surviving her is beloved Penelope “Pipi,” the yapping PITA-Yomeranian, who will be searching for scraps from Grandma for a long time to come.

Alberta leaves a beautiful legacy of six grandchildren: James Robert Hermann, Brad Joseph Wardlow (Erin), Christopher Boyd Hermann (Linda), Sarah Rene Koeppen (Justin, aka “Jason” to Grannie), Cynthia Marie Sparks (Daniel), all of Leavenworth, Kan., and Michael Donald Hamman (Sarah) of Wichita Falls, Texas. She also has 10 step-grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and step-great and step-great-great grandchildren.

Alberta spent most of her childhood in Fort Scott and her married life in Leavenworth. Her later years were back in Fort Scott, and finally for the last 10 years, under the care (and thumb) of Cecilia in Kansas City. While living in Leavenworth, Mom and Dad were avid bowlers, playing in several leagues. She was also a lifetime member of the Leavenworth Bunco Club, a Brownie leader, and a volunteer for the Salvation Army. As a young lady, Alberta played the violin, and in later years, her eyes lit up whenever she heard “Casino,” always followed immediately by “Let me get my purse.” Alberta loved to sew and crochet in her spare time, and always had Elvis or country music playing nearby.

Visitation will be at 12:30 p.m. Friday, July 21, 2017 with services at 1:15 p.m. Burial is at the National Cemetery at Leavenworth, followed by a reception at Calvary Baptist Church at 10th & Muncie.
