Greyhound softball beats Labette for 1st time in 11 years

Although Fort Scott Community College's softball team won just one of four games in a three-day period, that one win was one of the bigger wins in the four-year tenure of head coach Kristin Janes.

When the Greyhounds beat Labette, 7-3, in the first game of a Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division doubleheader at Parsons Monday, it was their first win over the Cardinals since 2006. Labette, which was a NJCAA Division II National Tournament qualifier each of the past two seasons, won the second game 9-2.

Fort Scott also played Maple Woods, an NJCAA Division I team Saturday at the Betty Ruth Willard Complex, losing both games 13-0 and 10-1.

Maple Woods (6-8) won Saturday's opener with 14 hits and an 8-run top of the sixth that brought about enforcement of the run rule after Fort Scott's turn in the bottom of the inning. Hayley Bledsoe was the only Greyhound with 2 hits.

Aubrey Smith and Lauren Scott had 2 hits each in game two. Maple Woods scored in every inning but the fifth and brought about the run rule again with 3 runs in the sixth.

In Monday's first game, Fort Scott (1-1, 9-12) went ahead with a 5-run fifth, breaking a 1-1 tie. Cheyenne Brewer led off with a single and switched places with Kaylan Morgan on a fielder's choice. Bledsoe reached on an error with Morgan moving to third on the play and scoring on Smith's single. Scott doubled to score Bledsoe. Michaela Brewer singled to bring Smith home. Taylor Brecheisen walked in front on Aimee Wimp's 2-out single that brought Scott and Brewer home.

Scott, Brewer and Brecheisen each had 2 hits for the Greyhounds.

Wimp, Morgan and Bledsoe each had one of Fort Scott's 3 hits in game two. Both Greyhound runs scored in the fifth inning on Bledsoe's double.

Fort Scott will be at home on Saturday and Sunday. The Greyhounds will play the Haskell University junior varsity on Saturday and the Missouri Valley College JV on Sunday.
