Greyhounds split on road, sweep at home
Fort Scott Community College's softball team split a non-conference doubleheader at State Fair, Mo., on Wednesday and swept North Arkansas at home Friday afternoon.
The Greyhounds (8-9) will face Maple Woods, Mo., this afternoon at the Betty Ruth Willard Complex with the non-conference twinbill starting at 1 p.m. The will open Jayhawk Conference-Division II play Monday against Labette at Parsons.
Wednesday: State Fair 13-4, Fort Scott 11-13.
SEDALIA, Mo. -- The Greyhounds led 6-3 going into the bottom of the fourth inning when the Roadrunners (5-4) exploded for 8 runs to take the lead.
Fort Scott scored 3 in the top of the sixth and then tied the game in the top of the seventh. Taylor Brecheisen drew a leadoff walk. Chelsea Snyder came in to pinch run and scored on Jackie Kirkpatrick's double. After a fly out to center, Kirkpatrick moved to third on a groundout and scored the tying run on a 2-out error on a Kayla Morgan grounder.
State Fair scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to take the win.
Brecheisen was 3 for 3 for the 'Hounds with two doubles and 2 runs batted in. Morgan, Chelsea Brewer, Hayley Bledsoe, Aubrey Smith and Lauren Scott each had 2 hits. Scott drove in 3 runs while Bledsoe and Smith drove in 2 each.
The Greyhounds committed 8 errors in game one. They wouldn't commit any in the second game.
Fort Scott led game two 4-0 after one inning. Aimee Wimp led off the game with a double. Brewer reached safely on a bunt and Bledsoe singled to drive in Wimp ahead of the first of two Scott home runs.
Scott, who was 3 for 4 with 6 runs batted in, also hit a 2-run homer in the third to make it 7-0.
Wimp was 3 for 4 at the plate as well. Brewer and Bledsoe were each 2 for 4 with 2 RBI. Brewer went 2 for 3 and Brecheisen drove in 2 runs.
Bledsoe was the winning pitcher, allowing no runs on 3 hits and 3 walks with a strikeout. She pitched the first 4 innings and returned to the circle in the sixth.
Friday: Fort Scott 18-10, North Arkansas 3-2.
The entire doubleheader was completed in just under three hours despite all the runs Fort Scott scored.
North Arkansas (5-11) scored 2 in the top of the first inning of the opener. But the Greyhounds responded with 6 in the bottom of the first on their way to leading 18-3 after four. The game ended after North Arkansas' turn in the top of the fifth on the run rule.
Beldsoe (3-2) pitched all 5 innings in this one. She allowed 3 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks while striking out 3. She also went 3 for 4 at the plate with 4 runs batted in.
Jenna Nevius was 3 for 3 for the Greyhounds. Scott and Brecheisen each went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI. Scott hit a pair of doubles. Wimp and Morgan also had 2 hits each.
Game two was tied 1-1 after two innings and North Arkansas added another run in the top of the third. Fort Scott responded with 7 in the bottom of the third and added 2 more in the fourth. Once again, the run rule kicked in after North Arkansas' turn in the top of the fifth.
Wimp (3-3) allowed one earned run on 3 hits and 2 walks, striking out 2.
Brewer and Wimp were each 2 for 2. Morgan, Allie Rooks and Michaela Brewer each drove in 2 runs.
After losing three in a row, including Wednesday's opener, the Greyhounds have won three straight.
