Highland eliminates 'Hound men from KJCCC title chase

HIGHLAND -- Fort Scott Community College's men will not win the Jayhawk Conference-Division II regular-season title for the first time since the division was created three seasons ago. That was assured when Highland clinched no worse than a share of the championship after defeating the Greyhounds, 48-43, here Saturday afternoon.

Fort Scott fell to 4-4 in the division (third place), 5-6 in Region VI seeding and 13-16 overall with the loss. They can still get a first-round home game in the upcoming Region VI Tournament but to do so they must beat region independent Brown Mackie in the final home game of the regular season at Arnold Arena tonight and also see Labette (2-5, 6-5, 14-14) lose at home to Highland. The Greyhounds hold a tie-breaker over the Cardinals on the virtue of a sweep of the season series but must beat Brown Mackie to avoid losing the season series to the Lions (4-7, 13-16) and falling to the No. 6 seed.

The 'Hounds scored just 16 first-half points Saturday. They shot 11 percentage points better than the Scotties (5-2, 8-3, 22-7) but Highland made four more 3-pointers.

Tyler Zinn led Fort Scott with 11 points. Brolon Moton followed with 10. Stephon Jackson paced Highland with 15 points.

Tonight's game begins at 7:30 p.m.
