Fewell fourth at Rose Hill
ROSE HILL -- Zarek Fewell was the only medalist for Fort Scott High School at the always-loaded Rose Hill Invitational over the weekend, finishing fourth at 152 pounds.
Fort Scott only brought four athletes to the event. Fewell, who is ranked No. 6 in Class 4A at 152 pounds by the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association, began the tournament with a 13-5 major decision over Garrett Thompson of Jayhawk-Linn. Fewell then went on to defeated Salina Central's Donivyn Will in overtime by a 5-3 score.
In the championship semifinals, top-ranked Anthony Scantlin of Mulvane defeated Fewell by a 7-0 score. Scantlin went on to win the bracket and stay undefeated on the season.
Fewell went into consolation where he pinned Chase Gummeringer of Andale. Will won a rematch in the third-place bout by a 4-3 score.
Chris Stell was 2-2 at 138 pounds. He won his first-round match against Andover's Wyatt Voth via technical fall, leading 22-7 when the match was stopped. Cade Lindsey of Derby, who is ranked No. 2 in Class 6A, pinned Stell in the championship quarterfinal. Lindsey also went on to win the bracket.
Stell then faced Jeff Houser of Mulvane in consolation and won 2-0. Dallas Boone of Valley Center eliminated Stell via pin.
Kyle Montojo went 0-2 at 120 pounds. He was pinned by Michael Daniels of Bonner Springs, drew a bye in consolation, then was pinned by Brady McDonald of Chanute.
Greg Lorenz was 0-2 in a 126-pound bracket that had to have "wrestle-ins" after 20 grapplers entered the field. Lorenz was in one of those wrestle-ins and lost by pin to Chase Plywell of Lindsborg-Smoky Valley by pin with 20 seconds left in the match. He was eliminated by pin by Travis Bilhimer of Rose Hill.
The Tigers will go to Independence Thursday to take part in the fourth edition of the Southeast Kansas League Dual Tournament. This tournament will determine the league champion team.
