Greyhound women hold off Brown Mackie

SALINA -- Fort Scott Community College's women had to hold off a fourth-quarter rally from Brown Mackie to take a 55-51 win in Region VI-Division II play.

Though not a conference game, the win helps the Greyhounds for post-season tournament seeding purposes. They're now a game behind Kansas City Kansas for the No. 4 seed. Finishing third or fourth in the region would ensure that Fort Scott (2-4 region, 14-5 overall) would host a first-round game. The top two seeds receive a first-round bye and will host a tournament semifinal. The third and fourth seeds host a first-round game. The team that finishes seventh does not qualify for the tournament.

Fort Scott is now a game ahead of Brown Mackie (1-5, 10-13) and two ahead of Hesston (0-6, 7-13) with tie-breakers over both of them.

The game was tied 26-26 at the half but Fort Scott outscored Brown Mackie 16-7 in the third to go into the final stanza with a nine-point lead. The Lions outscored the 'Hounds 18-13 in the fourth.

Natalia Ready led all scorers with 17 points as she made 7 of 11 field-goal attempts. She was also Fort Scott's only double-digit scorer. Haley Tiles, the Lions' only bench player, led her team with 16 points followed by Allexis Bowman with 15.

This is the final season for Brown Mackie athletics as the school will close at the end of May.

The Greyhounds begin their second time around the Jayhawk Conference schedule Wednesday night at Labette.
