Fewell takes second at Eudora
EUDORA -- Zarek Fewell, ranked No. 3 by the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association in Class 4A at 152 pounds, finished as the runner-up in that weight class here Saturday at the Eudora Tournament of Champions.
Fewell's finish was the highlight of the weekend for the Tigers, who finished 18th out of 21 teams in the two-day affair after only bringing six wrestlers. Emporia was the tournament team champion with 257.5 points followed by Louisburg with 243 and Tonganoxie with 228. Fort Scott scored 77 points.
Fewell went 5-1 in the tournament. He pinned Dylan Meyer of Louisburg and John Gorman of Shawnee Mission East and defeated Alex Huaracha of St. Marys, 17-6, in pool matches. In the championship quarterfinal, Fewell pinned Chase Carter of DeSoto. Then in the semifinal, he defeated Caden Searcy of Tonganoxie, 3-2. In the finals, Tanner Johnson of Holcomb, rabked No. 5 in Class 4A, took a 6-3 win.
Chris Stell finished seventh at 138 pounds. He pinned Buhler's Josh Glasgow, Kansas City-Schlagle's Jose Rodriguez, Schlagle's Sergio Sanchez and Tonganoxie's Gad Husemen in his pool matches. Rodriguez was an extra wrestler Schlagle entered and could not score points for his team. Huseman came in to the tournament ranked No. 4 in Class 4A.
Christian Norton of Spring Hill defeated Stell in the quarterfinals by a 5-1 score. Stell lost to Ja'Melle Dye of Lawrence, 14-7, in the consolation semifinals. Stell defeated DeSoto's Dustin Pierce, 9-2, in the seventh-place match.
Kyle Montojo made it to the seventh-place match at 120 pounds. He pinned Colton Scholz of Atchison County and lost to Adam Whitson of Buhler via technical fall in his pool matches. In the quarters, Schlagle's Mason Turner won by pin. In consolation, Montojo lost the semifinal to Logan Elbrader of St. Thomas Aquinas, 7-5, and was pinned by Whiston in a rematch in the seventh-place bout.
Greg Lorenz was 1-2 at 126 pounds and did not place. He was pinned by Nilton Sandoval of Emporia and Isaias Olson of Shawnee Mission South. He pinned Sam Moore of St. Marys.
Mannie Gonzales was also 1-2, wrestling at 132 pounds. He was pinned by Louisburg's Justin Batten and Buhler's Justin Herschberger. He won by pin over Logan Lancaster of DeSoto.
Ben Daniels was 1-3 at 220 pounds. He was pinned by Derrick Ferguson of Ottawa, Justin Schuman of Shawnee Mission East and Tristen Brecheisen of Eudora. He pinned Spring Hill's Nick Sprague.
The Tigers will wrestle in the Ottawa Tournament Saturday before going on the holiday break.
