NEVADA -- Fort Scott Community College's women continued the best-ever start in program's history here Friday night as the Greyhounds improved to 10-0 with a 77-60 victory over Cottey at the Hinkhouse Center.

Both teams came out on fire, as the 'Hounds led early, 6-3, courtesy of baskets from Lillie Holtgrave, Sarah Kelley, and Chasity Moore.

The Comets (2-5) responded with an 8-2 run, capped by an Alexandria Alvarez trey from the right wing to hand Cottey an 11-8 advantage.

FSCC head coach Jeff Tadtman, in his first season after his previous school, Carl Albert State College in Oklahoma, dropped its basketball program, called a time out after the Alvarez 3-pointer, which seemed to work as Fort Scott responded with a 14-3 blitz to close out the first quarter with a 22-14 lead.

Fort Scott went up 28-18 midway through the second via forward Carly Bohannon's bucket off the right block. The 'Hounds extended their lead to 34-20 with 5:29 remaining in the first half courtesy of a Jordyn Danzer triple from the left wing .

The Comets were able to cut into the deficit, ending the half on a 10-3 spurt as Alvarez and fellow freshman guard Destiney Teniente picked up the scoring slack for Cottey. FSCC still led, 37-30, at the intermission.

Cottey's run continued into the third quarter, as a Cheyenne Ortiz offensive rebound and lay-in trimmed the Greyhounds' lead to 37-35.

With 4:01 remaining in the third, a Malory Moles 3-pointer tightened the contest, bringing the Comets within 42-40. That was as close as the Comets would get the remainder of the game, as the Greyhounds responded with a 7-0 run to end quarter.

Fort Scott spent the majority of the final stanza at the charity stripe, slowly increasing its lead.

After breaking FSCC's full-court press with little trouble through the first three quarters, Cottey finally appeared to be rattled by it in the fourth, as sophomores Yazmin Batch and Natalia Ready wreaked havoc in the backcourt.

Tadtman said after the game that he was not pleased with his squad's full-court press in the first half.

"I thought our press was very ineffective," he said. "But give a lot of credit to Cottey for that.

"In the second half, we just decided to play a little harder, matched their intensity and got some things rolling are way."

Batch finished the contest with a game-high 20 points and three steals while knocking down 12 of 14 free throws.

Tadtman said he was pleased with Batch's play.

"(Yazmin) had a terrific game at State Fair (last Wednesday) night," he said. "She's had three straight games where she has been solid. She doesn't always make the right decisions, but she gave us a big lift for sure."

Moore added 12 points to go along with 13 rebounds for Fort Scott. Three others -- Danzer, Ready and Holtgrave -- each scored 9 points.

Moles finished with a team-high 12 points while pulling down seven rebounds for Cottey. Alvarez added 11 points and Kelsey Acton 10.
