'Hound women off to best start since 1982-83

KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- With their wins over the weekend at the Keith Lindsay Classic here, Fort Scott Community College's women have accomplished a feat that has not been achieved since 1982.

Friday's 74-70 win over Penn Valley put the Greyhounds at 5-0, their best start since 2007-08 when they also won their first five games.

Saturday's 75-70 overtime victory over the University of St. Mary JV out them at 6-0 for the first time since early in the 1982-83 season. That team started 7-0 on its way to a 23-9 season.

Friday, the Greyhounds trailed Penn Valley 26-19 after one quarter. The Scouts held a 40-35 lead at the half but Fort Scott managed to get within a point by the end of the third before outscoring Penn Valley 21-16 in the fourth quarter.

Chasity Moore made 7 of 11 shots from the field, finishing with 16 points to lead the 'Hounds. Sarah Kelley added 13 points and also grabbed 11 rebounds. Jordyn Danzer chipped in with 12 pints.

Mia Cushon led Penn Valley with 23 points. Zoe Albion had 15 and Alexis Fells had 12.

Saturday, St. Mary held a one-point lead at the end of the first quarter and Fort Scott had a one-point lead at the end of the third. The score was tied 13-13 at the half and 66-66 at the end of regulation.

Natalia Ready led Fort Scott with 15 points. Moore went 6 of 9 from the field to add 14 points. Kelley scored 13 and Tabor Spruling finished with 12.

The Greyhounds co-host the Gladbach Classic at Arnold Arena this weekend along with FSCC's men. Women's games on Friday feature Cottey versus Connors State, Okla., at 2 p.m. and Fort Scott vs. Penn Valley at 6 p.m. Saturday, Penn Valley takes on Connors State at noon and Fort Scott faces Cottey at 4 p.m.
