Tigers eliminated in 1st round of Sub-State
LOUISBURG -- Fort Scott High School's volleyball season came to a close here Saturday in the first round of the Louisburg Class 4A-Division I Sub-State Tournament.
Top-seeded Paola defeated the Tigers (12-23) in straight sets, 25-14, 25-13. Second-seeded Louisburg won the other semifinal, sweeping Ottawa, 25-16, 25-18. Paola (25-12) then beat Louisburg (23-17) for the right to go to this weekend's State tournament at Salina, 25-22, 29-27.
Two Southeast Kansas League teams will be going to State. SEK champion Pittsburg won the right to go to the Class 5A State tourney by its Sub-State at Arkansas City. The Purple Dragons (35-5) got by seventh-seeded Liberal in three sets, 23-25, 25-19, 25-22, before sweeping third-seeded Maize, 27-25, 25-16.
Pittsburg is seeded fifth at State, which takes place in Topeka. In pool play on Friday, the Dragons will face Emporia, St. Thomas Aquinas and Goddard-Eisenhower.
Independence won its home Class 4A-Division I Sub-State to advance to State at Salina. The Bulldogs (31-8) bounced rival Coffeyville in straight sets, 25-9, 25-15, before beating Labette County (22-15) in three, 26-24, 23-25, 25-15.
Indy is seeded third at State. Their pool-play matches on Friday will be against Andover Central, McPherson and Rose Hill.
