FOOTBALL FRIDAY: Battle of Eagles this week
Uniontown will face Olpe for the first time since 2009 when the teams meet in Olpe tonight.
Uniontown is 2-2 on the season and comes off a loss last week to Kansas City Christ Prep at home. The Eagles have posted shutouts in both of their victories but have been shut out in both of their losses.
Olpe is 1-3, unusual for the storied program even though it is the seventh-smallest school that plays 11-man football (78 students). Because its the only school in the Lyon County League that plays 11-man, it has to play an independent schedule. Because of its past success, it ends up playing tougher opponents. The Eagles' losses this season have come to Class 3A power St. Marys (20-14), Class 3A Caney Valley (14-7) and Class 4A-Division II school Burlington (20-7 last week), which has 215 students -- almost three times as many as Olpe. The Eagles' only win came in Week Three, a 35-33 victory over Class 3A Osage City.
Uniontown will be the first Class 2-1A school the Eagles have played this season. Likewise, this will be Uniontown's first game of the season against a 2-1A school (Christ Prep, as a non-KSHSAA school, is not classified).
No statistics are available for Olpe. Uniontown has had good performances from freshmen this season. Quarterback Anthony Reed leads the Eagles in rushing with 396 yards and has passed for 83 yards. Classmate Ty Davidson has the most receiving yards, 54. On the other side of the ball, frosh Colt Eck leads with 22 tackles.
Kickoff tonight is at 7 p.m. Olpe's field is just behind the high school building.
