Storms disrupt Indy tourney
INDEPENDENCE -- Storms in the area caused the Independence Tournament to be suspended here Thursday, but Fort Scott High's team had seen some good results while head coach Lynn Barr took a look at his lineup.
"With this not being a medal tournament, we shuffled our lineup around a little bit," Barr said. "Some positions are set, but there are a few that are still up for grabs and we really need someone to step up and play with more intensity and consistency. Until that happens, we will probably have to continue to shuffle players in and out."
Barr used one lineup in the matches against Iola and another the rest of the day. Both singles entries, Alex King (1-10) and Rebekah Sweyko (1-0) received dedault wins as the Fillies did not have players in those slots. The No. 1 doubles team of Emily Adams and Addison Cunningham (4-5) picked up an 8-7 (7-6) win over Erin Klubek/Macayla Bycroft. The No. 2 team of Mikayla Norris and Briana Williams, playing together for the first time, won 8-4 over Jennifer Tidd/Karley Sescon.
The Tigers lost all four matches to their next two opponents, Independence and Pittsburg. King played No. 1 singles and fell to Lyssa Schabel of Independence, 8-0, and Nicol Konopelko of Pittsburg, 8-3. Williams switched to No. 2 singles and lost to Indy's Amanda Trout, 8-3, and Pittsburg's Madie Baden, 8-6.
Cunningham paired with Norris in No. 1 doubles. They fell to Indy's Julian and Qwynn Marquez, 8-0, and Pittsburg's Abie Felter/Madison Vogel, 8-2. Addington and Sweyko teamed up in No. 2 doubles and lost to Groff/King of Independence, 8-1, and Chania Stewart/Alexa Yantis of Pittsburg, 8-1.
Addington and Sweyko were the only Tigers to get their match in against Chanute. They defeated Nakia Palmer/Selena Stich, 8-1.
The rest of this tournament will be made up on September 19. The Tigers will play here again Tuesday in a different tournament. Play begins at 3 p.m.
The Fort Scott JV hosts its second tournament Monday. Play begins at 1 p.m. at FSHS and Woodland Hills.
