Paola shuts out Tigers in Regional final

PAOLA --Grant Goldston no-hit Spring Hill in the first round of the Paola Class 4A-Division I Regional Tournament here Tuesday. But then top-seeded Paola shut down the Tigers' offense when it needed to to come away with the championship in the finals.

Semifinal: Fort Scott 2, Spring Hill 0.

Goldston (3-0) allowed 4 walks and struck out 10 in becoming the second Tiger individual to toss a no-hitter this season. Colby Page threw a perfect game in the first game of a doubleheader against Coffeyville on April 28. Jarret Lyon and Taylor Engstrom combined to pitch a no-hitter against Parsons in the first game of an April 11 twinbill.

Fort Scott had just three hits, two of them from the bat of Jeron Poyner. The other came from Kaleb DeLaTorre as he led off the game with a single past second base. He stole second and scored on a groundout.

The Tigers' other run scored in the third. Carter Young drew a leadoff walk. He moved to second and then third on wild pitches. On the second wild pitch, Paola's catcher tried to throw him out but overthrew the base, allowing Young to score.

Third-seeded Spring Hill's season came to an end with a record of 10-9. In the other semifinal, Paola beat fourth-seeded Louisburg, 4-3. The Wildcats were eliminated with a record of 7-11.

Finals: Paola 6, Fort Scott 0.

The Tigers (14-8) had 8 hits in game two, including 3 by De'Vonte Robinson and 2 from DeLaTorre. They had two runners on base in the each of the first three innings, the fifth and the top of the seventh.

The Panthers needed just 4 hits to score their 6 runs. Paola scored 2 runs each in the bottom of the first, third and sixth innings as they advanced to next weekend's Class 4A-Division I State Tournament with a record of 17-5 after defeating the Tigers for the third time this season.
