Game 2 rally allows Paola to sweep Tigers
PAOLA -- A Paola rally in the bottom of the seventh inning of the second game allowed the Panthers to complete a sweep of Fort Scott High School baseball in a non-league doubleheader here Monday.
The Panthers won the opener, 9-3, and took the nightcap, 4-3, by scoring in the bottom of the seventh after the Tigers (9-5) had tied the score in the top of the frame.
Fort Scott saw a seven-game winning streak broken. It was the first time in 11 doubleheaders going back to last season that the Tigers had been swept.
Fort Scott led game one early, 2-1, after two innings and was up 3-2 after three.
Carter Young doubled to lead off the second and scored on Marcus Jamison's single. Jamison came in on Gunnar Brown's single to center later in the inning.
Kaleb DeLaTorre reached on an error with one out in the third and went on to score on Grant Goldston's single to center.
Paola tied the score 3-3 in the fourth and scored 6 times in the fifth.
Goldston was 2 for 4 at the plate for the Tigers.
Fort Scott scored in each of its first two half-innings in game two but Paola scored in its first three to take the lead. Kieran Houlihan drove in DeLaTorre in the first inning. DeLaTorre singled in Engstrom in the second.
DeLaTorre, who was 2 for 3, singled to the left side of the infield leading off the top of the seventh. He advanced to third on a Jeron Poyner single and scored on a double-play ball, tying the score 3-3.
Paola scored in the bottom of the seventh on a leadoff walk, a single and an error.
The Tigers return to Southeast Kansas League play -- where they have won seven games -- on Thursday when they play at Coffeyville.
